The other elven races both have common names and elven names. Wood elf and bosmer, High elves and altmer, dark elves and dunmer, orcs and orismer. Were the snow elves called falmer, or was that created for the falmer themselves?

The Snow Elves 'mer' name are Falmer. Although Falmer are now most commonly referred to the blind, savage versions of the Snow Elves, hence why the civilized Falmer would prefer to be called 'Snow elves.'
I always think of the name Falmer as being a shortened way of saying Fallen Mer and before the Snow Elves became whats now called the Falmer they were just Aldmer who lived in Skyrim so nicknamed Ice or Snow Elves, thats not so much canon as just the impresion i get.
That's what I thought too.
Falmer isn't english, it's derived from the Elven languages. Fal means Snow or something close to it.
Indeed. Fal means snow in the ancient Aldmeri language.
