Hey everyone! Today I'd like to discuss the many types of scaly friends and fiends dotted across Tamriel, in the form of a list with pictures and descriptions of each entry. I am going to be organizing the entries based on both made-up and real-life reptile families. I hope you enjoy!
LIZARDS
There is a wide array of lizard species living across the continent in all shapes and sizes. Below is a list of everything I could dig up involving the lizards of Tamriel.
Lizard: Represented in the above image, the animal known simply as "lizard" is the most common example of lizards found throughout the Tamrielic mainland. It is theorized by some, jokingly or otherwise, that they may be an ancestor of the Argonians.
Duneracer:
The Duneracer is a large, elongated, armored lizard typically found in the arid landscape of Craglorn. It is closely related to the Duneripper, but differing in that it is covered in horns and spikes.
As stated above, the Duneripper is a close relative of the Duneracer. It's a large, aggressive, armored lizard usually spotted basking on the sands of Elsweyr. While their speed is moderate above-ground, they can dig through the desert at lighting fast speeds. Their attacks typically consist of biting and ramming.
Much like the common lizard, the Thorn Gecko is usually small and harmless. It resides in the deserts of Hammerfell and Elsweyr.
Gone completely ignored on the Wiki, the Bear-Lizard is a strong, aggressive predator native to Black Marsh. It patrols the swamps of Murkmire searching for prey and Vestiges to tackle. As for its appearance, its name says it all: a lizard shaped like a bear.
Making its debut as an unboxable mount in ESO, the Horse-Lizard, like the Bear Lizard, is exactly what the name suggests.
SNAKES
Despite common misconception, my name is not an inappropriate innuendo, but rather it represents how I'm nuts for snakes!
Like the lizards of Tamriel, her snake species come in all sizes, but retain the trademark slenderness and flexibility that makes them snakes.
Like the entry at the beginning of this thread, the most common snake found on the mainland is simply known as "snake". Harmless to people and large creatures, the common snake is likely no different from real-life counterparts of the same size: making its home in grasses and holes, feasting on small animals like rats and lizards.
You got snakes, but then you got giant snakes. These monstrosities are as long as they are deadly, and are known to devour small boats. They're usually found in or near bodies of water, hence their typical alliance with the Sea Vipers, a group of Moarmer (Sea Elves).
You got giant snakes, THEN you got sea serpents. These massive leviathans are close relatives of the Giant Snake. Legend has it that they were formed by the blood of a fish caught by an Aldmer fisherman, that pled for its life but was not spared. The Sea Elves (Moarmer) of the island of Pyandonea have been known to tame these beasts as both mounts and weapons of war.
These ugly, shallow-dwelling snakes are native to the Summerset Isles, and are a hostile threat to beach-travellers who wander too close to the shorebreak. Curiously, these marine reptiles also have wings. Whether or not they can take to the skies is not fully known. They have a close (and identical) relative called the Sea Adder, which is smaller and a bit more polite.
A desert-dwelling relative to the Reef Viper (and, in turn, the Sea Adder), the Sep Adder is a winged snake found in Hew's Bane, Hammerfell. They can be witnessed hunting rats and chickens.
The Lamia are a primitive race of serpentine beastfolk found in Black Marsh, High Rock, and Hammerfell. While typically seen as mindless predators, these snake-people are not only capable of intelligent thought, but also, in some cases, Tamrielic speech. All known individuals of the Lamia have the torso of a human/mer woman, featuring breasts of unknown function. They prefer environments with aquatic zones, and have special regenerative abilities when submerged in dark water.
TURTLES
Ah yes, turtles. Gotta love 'em. Who doesn't? Turtles are like puppies: If you dislike them, there's something wrong with you. Sadly, however, turtles are almost unheard of in the Elder Scrolls Universe, so those turtle-haters out there will be happy to know that this will be short and sweet.
A simple digital image of this absolute unit simply cannot do the Haj Mota justice. This hulking fortress of a reptile can be found in deserts, beaches, swamps and obituaries alike. Being the supreme apex predator of its homelands, the Haj Mota is a force to be reckoned with, with a rediculously powerful bite, a sharpened head crest, an ebony-strength carapace, and digging abilities rivaled only by the Duneripper. Lastly, let it be known that this turtle is no slowpoke.
Meet Mock Turtle. He's a good boy. He is the only known member of the Great Turtle species, mentioned only by Mock Turtle and never again by anyone else, which were used in a special soup. He supposedly went to school in the ocean. He can be found in a secret room in Battlespire. Oh, and did I mention he can speak?
His existance is as much canon as it is an easter egg, being a reference to a character of the same name from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
CROCODILIANS
The long-snouted, bestial reptiles including Crocodiles, Alligators, Caiman, and Gharials of reality are, like the turtles, not very numerous in The Elder Scrolls. Here's what I could find:
Exactly what you'd expect, the crocodile is a giant, low-walking aquatic reptile that uses ambush tactics to attack prey. They're found (usually by running without looking) in wetlands in almost every province.
I really wish I had a picture of these beasts, but alas, they've only ever been mentioned. It is said that werecrocodiles are a strain of lycanthropy common among Argonians.
DRAGONS
I'll be real with you, we're all Skyrim players here. We know what dragons are and we know all that hogwash about wyverns and whatnot, but I'm going to go into detail anyways for the sake of consistency.
The most feared creatures to ever walk Nirn and fly its skies, the Dragon couldn't even fairly be called an animal, let alone a reptile, and probably shouldn't even be on this list. Hell, they're hardly even natural, being made by the Divines, incapable of reproduction, magical, and immortal. There is a seemingly endless array of different variations, from Frost Dragons to Serpentine Dragons to whatever the heck Durnehviir was. Dragons are capable of speech in multiple different languages, and are exceedingly intelligent. They draw their power from the Thu'um.
(Edit note: These couldn't fairly be called a reptile. They're demigods and objects of Aedric power. I'm keeping them here merely for entertainment purposes, especially since dragons in other media are widely considered to be reptilian.)
A common, magical reptile found around the Iliac Bay (High Rock and Hammerfell), the Dragonling is a small, dragon-like enemy that usually breaths fire. It is unknown whether or not it actually is related to dragons, but likely isn't. Dragonlings speak a language called Dragonish, and can be calmed by people who speak it. Those Dragonish-speaking people have said that, behind their violent exterior, lies wisdom.
BIPEDALS
Morrowind is known for its unique biodiversity involving giant bugs and, you guessed it, bipedal reptiles. Obviously, I'll be discussing the latter, but I'll be saving humanoid reptiles for a different section.
These squat, stumpy pig-dinos are some of the most commonly-tamed animals in Morrowind and Black Marsh, being used for everything, including burden, transportation, companionship, war, and scent-tracking, due to intelligence that surpasses that of horses. In the wild, they forage for grasses and roots, occasionally snacking on critters.
If an angry Orc and a Guar had a baby, this is what it would look and act like. They're aggressive and dangerous, devouring anything, plant or animal alike, they can get their gaping maws on. They're widely considered by the people of Morrowind and Black Marsh as pests, and their meat is said to be poisonous. Their hides are strong, and their hearts are used by the Argonians as a delicacy.
The granddaddies of bipedals, the Kagouti are things to be feared. They're top predators of Morrowind, Black Marsh, and Elsweyr with voracious appetites. The males are brightly colored, while the females are more drab.
These smiley little lizard-chickens are used by the Dunmer as their alternative to the chicken. It is said the Moth Priests claim these are the cutest creatures in Tamriel.
Not much needs to be said about these teeny little buddies from Morrowind other than "What a cutie!"
Unlike the other bipedals, the wormmouth is native to Hammerfell. They may look brutish and a bit scary, but they're relatively harmless to people, despite the fact that they live off of bodily fluids and plant juices. It is unknown how many worms they eat.
FLYERS
Lacking a better name for this category, I chose to dub these pterodactyl-like reptiles "flyers", because, surprise surprise, they fly.
If you've ever played Morrowind, you likely know exactly what these evil little things are. During the Third Era, Cliff Racers were some of the most common creatures to fill the skies of Morrowind, and attacked anyone and anything they saw. Before this, they were very docile, and it is said they became aggressive through cross-breeding with the rambunctious Cliff Strider during the Second Era. By the Fourth Era, their population dropped drastically when a Dunmer named Jiub drove them from Vvardenfell, becoming a saint by the decree of Vivec.
A heavier, larger cousin of the Cliff Racer, the Cliff Strider can't fly, and is limited to climbing and gliding. They're aggressive and dangerous, and can even spit poison at long distances. Their young are known as Cliff Skippers, and are guarded ferociously by their parents. They are, unshockingly, found in Morrowind.
Looking for a Morrowind flying reptile that won't rip your face off? Well look no further than the Cliff Darter! Unlike its relatives, this creature is heavily feather-clad, and can be best described as a vulture with scales.
The Wiki states that this is a type of bird. Hogwash. Who thought of that? That is so clearly wrong it's almost painful. Anyways, the Hackwing is a brightly-colored flying reptile native to Black Marsh. Their preferred hunting tactic involved heavily injuring prey, leaving, and coming back when said prey has died. Argonians use their plumage as a crafting material.
ARGONIANS
I don't want to go in depth with this. It's an iceberg I simply have no desire to tackle due all the details I'd have to cover and also the many megathreads that were made about it, so this will be a shorty. I'm relying on the fact that you already know what an Argonian is to accomplish this, sorry for the inconvenience.
Humanoid lizard-men we all know and love, the Saxhleel are the most populous of all the Argonian races. They are natives to Black Marsh are common in Morrowind due to the slave trade.
A barbaric breed of Argonian incapable of emotional facial expression, the Naga are a rare, snake-headed people native to the Murkmire region of Black Marsh. They are made by a different type of Hist featuring blue blossoms instead of red. They honor their dead by making weapons and armor out of their body parts. Unironically I want that to happen to my corpse, thanks.
Oh lawd he comin. Ooga booga, big lizard, made by tree for protect.
Nothing else to it.
THE UNGROUPABLES
Below is a list of every reptilian species I couldn't put in a category. I'll start with the best one.
Once you have been stared down by the infamous Wamasu, a Haj Mota looks like a teddy bear. These dragon-like monstrosities are every Argonian's worst nightmare. They are unique not only in size and power, but also in that they can generate electricity. Some go so far as to say their blood is made entirely out of electricity!
This towering beast is a thing of nightmares, and is described by some of the people of Craglorn as a mix between a scorpion and a Wamasu. It has four legs for walking and two arms for clawing, topped off with a sharp, barbed tail.
Being yet another monster of the marshes, little is known about the Swamp Leviathan other than it's the size of a castle with nine-foot-long claws. It's covered in horns and tusks, with a large sail on its back, suggesting an aquatic lifestyle. The Wamasu is merely this creature's morning coffee, and it seems as though you can hear it coming due to an annoying ringtone coming from its stomach...
This four-eyed, wolf-like reptile is a favored guard-dog of Goblins, who are responsible for populations outside of the Durzog's homeland of Morrowind. Durzogs found in the Wrothgarian Mountains of Orsinium are blue and have white feathers for protection against the cold in addition to camouflage.
Last and definitely least is the Medusa. Surprise! These exist! The Medusa is the third most powerful creature in The Elder Scrolls: Arena and are found lurking around in dungeons. Not shown in the image above is the lower half of a snake. Like the Gorgon of Greek mythos, the Medusa is a woman-snake hybrid capable of causing paralysis in anyone it stares at.
There are two reasons why I didn't put the Medusa in the Snake category:
Woops.
Haha no.
END NOTE:
"Where are the clannfears and deadroths?" says the curious reader. To them I say: "In Oblivion. This is a list of reptiles in Tamriel, and Daedra aren't animals".
Let it be known, though, that dragons follow the same principle, and as stated in the edit note, I decided to keep them on the list regardless.
Which one is your favorite?
