Hi, hope nobody minds me putting this big wall of text here. So to start I’ve been debating for a long time on getting a good gaming PC, a big part of that is finally being able to enjoy Skyrim in all its modded glory.
I don’t know much about building PCs, Google has been my friend when trying to understand features and specs of parts but I know I don’t know enough to be confident with what I’m looking at. So I decided who better to ask but a community of gamers who likely know what they're talking about when it comes to PC specs. I found a PC builder site which let me customise what I wanted which gave me a good idea of prices etc as I went aout it. I’ve come up with the below parts (excluding the unimportant stuff like the power pack which isn't terribly relevant here).
Below is what I have selected so far:
Core, Motherboard, Graphics Card and Cooling system
CPU:Intel® Core™ i7-10700KF- 8-Core 3.80GHz, 5.00GHz Turbo - 16MB Cache, Ultimate OC Compatible (No On-board Graphics)
MOTHERBOARD:ASUS ProART Z490 Creator 10G: ATX w/ RGB, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.2, 2x M.2
VIDEO:GeForce® RTX 2070 Super 8GB - Ray Tracing Technology, DX12®, VR Ready, HDMI, DP - 4 Monitor Support (Single Card)
Master Masterliquid Lite 240 Liquid Cooling System w/ 240mm Radiator
RAM: MEMORY:32GB (4x8GB) DDR4/3000mhz Dual Channel Memory [+58] (Corsair Vengeance LPX w/Heat Spreader)
M2SSD:500GB (1x500GB) Seagate Firecuda 520 M.2 PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD - 5000MB/s Read & 2500MB/s Write
HDD:2TB Seagate BarraCuda SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 7200RPM Hard Drive
I want this PC to last me five years or so at minimum, price isn't a terrible object but I don't want to really go beyond a budget of £2,200. The internet isn’t terribly helpful in understanding everything I want to know. So, questions:
Is this a good selection of parts to have chosen? Am I missing anything, including more than I need in certain areas or making a poor choice anywhere?
I am most worried about the memory/storage as i don't fully understand the relationship between SSDs, M.2 SSDs and Hard Drives. Is the Hard Drive unnecessary if I were to run say a 1TB M.2 SSD? Would I be better off with something other than an Hard Drive and the 500GB M.2 SSD I currently have?
Are the Motherboard and CPU enough, too much or not enough? I didn’t want to go over the top with them but also wanted long term functionality on the motherboard and decent performance on the CPU.
Is the cooling system too much or not enough? I don’t anticipate overclocking much if at all, I went with what appeared to be a cheaper product overall. Do I even need a cooling system?
After VAT, the site I am using gives me a prospective price of around £2,200. Is this good value for what I am getting?
And finally and most importantly, would a PC with these specs be able to play Skyrim with mods at greater than my current 0.5 frames per second? ( I get a solid 15-20 without mods, yay)
