Alchemy is a magic specialization skill that appears in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. The Alchemy discipline is the mastery of crafting potions from mundane substances, with intelligence being its governing attribute.

"Alchemy identifies magical properties in mundane substances. Substances are consumed directly, or prepared as potions to provide long-lasting benefits like healing and curing disease, water-walking, magical shielding, and fortifying bodily attributes."

The higher the Alchemy skill, the greater the benefit received from created potions; removal of negative effects, greater potency, longer lasting. Also, the number of properties identified per ingredient increases. Ingredients can be collected from creatures' body and plants, found in various containers in towns and buildings, and bought from individuals throughout the world. The simplest use, of the Alchemy skill, is to eat ingredients in order to experience the benefits (or harmful effect) of that ingredient, thereby learning its properties.

The skill level is increased upon successfully crafting a potion. When the progression of the current skill level reaches 100%, the skill level increases by 1.

Mixing potions[]

Main article: Potions (Morrowind)

At a minimum, two ingredients with the one property in common are required to create a potion. For each pair of properties in common, that effect will be added to the potion. A max of four ingredients can be used to craft a potion.

Tools[]

Main article: Apparatus (Morrowind)

In order to create potions, it is necessary to have the proper tools. At a minimum, a Mortar and Pestle is required. To gain the maximum benefit from the ingredients, other apparatuses are also needed. Use of an alembic, calcinator, and Retort, will remove negative effects, increase potency, and increase longevity of potions

Leveling[]

Leveling is only dependent on the quantity of potions created, not their value or effects. Thus, creating many cheap potions, such as Restore Fatigue from common food components, is an effective way of levelling the skill.
