Allies for Bruma is a quest in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This quest involves going to each major city in the province of Cyrodiil and appealing to the local Count or Countess for aid.

Overview[]

The Daedra of Oblivion are innumerable—the soldiers of Bruma are not. The gates generally have no outstanding features compared with other randomized gates.

Exceptions are Cheydinhal's gate, where the Hero meets up with Farwil and the Knights of the Thorn and starts The Wayward Knight and Kvatch, if Breaking the Siege of Kvatch was not completed. The main objective in each gate is to grab the Sigil Stone that keeps the gate open.

Upon closing each gate:

This is an optional quest; however, it is directly associated with the main quest and affects the difficulty of the Great Gate fight. It is recommended that this quest be completed if the Hero is high-level and encounters Dremora Valkynaz and Markynaz on a regular basis.

These enemies will pose much greater danger to allies and Martin than lower-level enemies would. If guards are not acquired from a city, the missing guards are replaced by Bruma Militia Men, but these are weaker than the guardsmen. It is recommended to, at minimum, get help from Anvil, Bravil, Cheydinhal, and Chorrol, as these cities will each send two guards.

Comments about the Gates[]

If civilians of the towns are spoken to, they will all give their insight on the Oblivion Gate outside their city. The guards also show their own perspective on the situation.

In the Counties of Cyrodiil:

Anvil:

"We'll be ready if the daedra decide to attack, don't worry."

Chorrol:

"No worries. Whatever happened at Kvatch won't happen here."

Skingrad:

"I'll be honest, that Oblivion Gate out there scares me. And believe me, nobody that works in the Skingrad Guard scares easy."

Bravil:

"The Count put the Guard on high alert. We'll be ready if the daedra decide to attack, don't worry."

Leyawiin:

"Guard stays inside the city walls for the duration of the crisis. Count Caro's orders. We're not going to risk another Kvatch here."

Cheydinhal:

"Count Indarys has ordered us to hold our positions until Farwil returns from inside that accursed Oblivion Gate."

Once the soldiers are gathered at Bruma:

Anvil, Anvil Soldier:

"Good to see you, sir. We won't forget how you helped Anvil."
"I always wanted to see the Jerall Mountains. Beautiful, aren't they? Almost makes you forget why we're here."

Chorrol, Chorrol Soldier:

"You don't need to worry about the daedra taking Bruma. You've got the best soldiers in Cyrodiil here now."
"The Mythic Dawn won't dare try anything now that the best soldiers in Cyrodiil are defending Bruma!"

Skingrad, Skingrad Soldier:

"I can't wait to get back to Skingrad. I ain't cut out for this damned weather."
"Is it always this cold up here? This weather would freeze the arse off an ogre."

Bravil, Viera Lerus:

"I look forward to fighting these daedra side by side with the Hero of Kvatch."

Leyawiin, Leyawiin Soldier:

"How long will Bruma need our help? Count Caro's orders were to return to Leyawiin as soon as Bruma was secure."
"I can't stay long. Count Caro's orders were to return to Leyawiin as soon as Bruma was safe."

Cheydinhal, Cheydinhal Soldier:

"You're the one that saved Cheydinhal from that Oblivion Gate, aren't you?"
"I'm sure you hear it all the time, but I'd like to thank you personally for closing that Oblivion Gate outside Cheydinhal. We were all expecting to become the next Kvatch, you know? With the Count worrying more about his son than the defense of the city, things were looking pretty grim. So, like I said, thanks. I'm glad I was able to come here and do my bit for our side, you know?"

Kvatch, Kvatch Soldier:

"I'm looking forward to some payback for what those bastards did to Kvatch."
"Remember Kvatch, that's our watchword. We won't let that happen here. Don't worry."

General:

"Do you think the attack will come soon, sir?"
"The cities of Cyrodiil are finally rallying together to make a stand against the Oblivion invasion. I'm starting to think we might actually beat the bastards!"
"We won't let those daedra take Bruma."
"You helped our city fight off those damned daedra. Now it's our turn to help Bruma."
"It's the waiting that gets to me. Why don't they just attack and get it over with?"

In the Counties of Cyrodiil:

Anvil:

"We're all wondering when more of those evil Gates are going to open. I'd leave town if I dared."

"Didn't you see that Oblivion Gate just outside the walls? Mara preserve us from the fate of Kvatch!"

Chorrol:

"I hope the Guard can hold off the daedra, but you think about what happened to Kvatch, and you can't help but worry."

"Our Countess will never let Chorrol fall to the daedra! Oblivion Gates be damned!"

Skingrad:

"The Count has ordered the Guard to defend the city to the last man. There will be no panic here."

"We're next. I'm sure of it. First Kvatch, now Skingrad! The daedra won't stop until we're all dead!"

"I'm not worried about the Gates. We'll be safe enough inside the walls."

Walls didn't help Kvatch. "Well. The guards must've been careless. But Captain Dione has the guard on full alert. We'll be safe."
Maybe so. "Certainly so. Captain Dione knows her business. And no enemy has ever made it over Skingrad's walls."

Bravil:

"Didn't you see that Oblivion Gate just outside the walls? Mara preserve us from the fate of Kvatch!"

"We're all wondering when more of those evil Gates are going to open. I'd leave town if I dared."

Leyawiin:

"Why doesn't the Elder Council send the Legion to help us? There's no telling when another Oblivion Gate will open!"

"Leyawiin stands alone. That's what Count Caro says. Only our brave Guardsmen to keep the hordes of Oblivion at bay."

Cheydinhal:

"Everyone is waiting to see if Farwil and his knights return from inside that dreadful Oblivion Gate. Such brave lads!"

"The whole town is on edge with that Oblivion Gate open just outside the walls."

"Business is bad with that damn Oblivion Gate outside of town. You think things can't get any worse, and then they do."

Allies for Bruma – MQ11
ID Journal Entry
10 Jauffre is worried that the Bruma Guard will not be able to defend Bruma from a full-scale attack by the Mythic Dawn and their daedric allies. He suggested that I try to obtain support from the other cities of Cyrodiil. Perhaps I can persuade the Elder Council in the Imperial City or the guilds to help as well.
20 I spoke to the Countess of Anvil. She said she would be glad to send help, if only her own city wasn't threatened by an Oblivion Gate. I should close the gate outside Anvil and then talk to the Countess again.

32 I spoke to Savlian Matius of the Kvatch guard. He would like to send help to Bruma, but he cannot spare the troops until the city is completely retaken from the daedra.
33 Savlian Matius thanked me again for my help in retaking Kvatch, and promised to send whatever troops he could spare to help defend Bruma.

50 I spoke to Chancellor Ocato, the head of the Elder Council. He was unable to promise any soldiers from the Imperial Legions, since they are all tied down in the provinces fighting the daedric invasion. He suggested I ask the Counts and Countesses of Cyrodiil for help.
90 The Countess of Bruma urged me to obtain any additional help that I can find. She fears that her troops will be overwhelmed before I can close the Great Gate.
95 I have obtained allies from everyone that might help. Bruma is as well-defended as possible.

Bugs[]

This section contains bugs related to Allies for Bruma. Before adding a bug to this list, consider the following:

  1. Please reload an old save to confirm if the bug is still happening.
  2. If the bug is still occurring, please post the bug report with the appropriate system template  360  /  XB1  ,  PS3  /  PS4  ,  PC  /  MAC  ,  NX  /  PS5  ,  XS  , depending on which platform(s) the bug has been encountered on.
  3. Be descriptive when listing the bug and fixes, but avoid having conversations in the description and/or using first-person anecdotes: such discussions belong on the appropriate forum board.
  • Occasionally, a count or countess will not acknowledge when a gate outside their city has been closed, despite the fact that everyone else in town does. This may be caused by the existence of another gate nearby, so closing the second gate may eliminate the problem.
  • It is possible that the Count of Skingrad may get stuck inside of his room after the Skingrad gate is closed. Sneaking inside to speak with him should allow the dialogue to continue normally. This may require a high Acrobatics skill to navigate over the roof of Castle Skingrad. The Hero can get the key during the quest "Ulterior Motives." To fix this go into the county Hall and talk to his steward.
    • Something similar may happen as a result of completing the "Vampire Cure" quest. As another result of this quest, Hassildor may not be able to enter conversation with the Hero, in which case attacking and yielding to him should reset his status.
  • The sigil stone in the gate may not respond when activated, making it impossible to close the gate.
  • When closing an Oblivion Gate and returning to the count or countess, sometimes the count or countess will send help and the quest is just abandoned.
