A frantic soul will tell the Dragonborn how he and his loyal steed Arvak came to this realm and were attacked by monsters, and begs them to find him.
Arvak's skull can be found east of the Boneyard entrance where Valerica is found. It is on a pedestal surrounded by ghosts that turn into mistmen, and will attack should the Dragonborn come close.
Returning the skull to the owner will allow the Dragonborn to learn the spell Summon Arvak.

PC 360 PS3 Sometimes, the skull does not get automatically removed from the inventory after learning Summon Arvak and finishing the quest. It is no longer considered a quest item, however, which would allow it to be removed from the inventory through normal means (e.g. selling it to merchants, dropping it, storing it in a container).
Getting off Arvak near the barrier where Valerica is located in the Soul Cairn may cause the dismount animation to glitch the Dragonborn through the barrier and put them on Valerica's side.
