An Ashkhan is traditionally the male leader and champion of the Ashlander clans.
Description[]
The Ashkhan serves an important role as chieftain and "warrior-protector" of the community they lead. Typically they are the tribe's strongest warrior. Second in command are one or several Gulakhans, champions who serve as the voice of the tribe in matters of trade and negotiations, dealing with outsiders on behalf of the Ashkhan.[1] The position of Gulakhan can be hereditary,[2] and in the event of the death of an Ashkhan his successor is typically chosen from among the Gulakhans.[3] While the Ashkhan leads in all material matters, the Wise Woman leads in all spiritual ones. The Ashkhan will almost always seek her counsel and obeys her visions.[4] On rare occasions, the Wise Woman may even take up the mantle of leadership in lieu that no current Ashkhan exists.[5]
History[]
In 3E 427, an outlander "born on a certain day to uncertain parents" sought out the various Ashlander tribes of Vvardenfell as part of the prophecy to be named the Nerevarine. This title could only be bestowed by the tribal leaders, whose own motivations ranged from the noble and honorable to greed and vanity. Either by words, deed or steel, the incarnate ultimately succeeded in this endeavor and went on to defeat the mad-god Dagoth Ur and save all of Morrowind.
