For other uses, see Betony.
Not to be confused with Greater Bretony.

The Protectorate of Betony is a small island region in the Iliac Bay situated southwest of Daggerfall. The War of Betony (3E 403) was fought over the isle, between the city-states of Daggerfall and Sentinel. Betony is a prosperous fishing isle and is strategically well-placed. It is vulnerable to attacks from the sea, which became a problem in the late Third Era as piracy grew more and more of a problem in the Illiac Bay. The largest settlement on the isle is Betony City. The regional deity is Mara and the dominant vampire clan is Vraseth.[1][2]

Political situation[]

Prior to the war, the island was, although officially independent, loosely controlled by the Kingdom of Sentinel. After the war and the defeat of Sentinel the isle became a protectorate of the Kingdom of Daggerfall.

At the time of its independence, Betony was ruled over by a Lord or a Lady. The Lord of Betony at the time of the War of Betony was Mogref.

Pelagius the Mad[]

A Temple of Kynareth on the Isle of Betony was a personal asylum to the Emperor Pelagius Septim III at the time of his death. He died in his cell at the Temple on his 34th year of ruling after a brief fever.

After Pelagius' death, the Temple he was contained in was destroyed. However, a group known as the Apostles of Light transported each original stone to the Shivering Isles where it was reconstructed and renamed The Howling Halls. Pelagius' ghost still haunts the Isles to this day.

Factions[]

Only the Fighters Guild and the Dark Brotherhood are present on the isle, both of which are located in the city of Whitefort.
