History[edit | edit source]

Third Era[edit | edit source]

The Blade of Woe first appeared as a unique Ebony Dagger during the events that unfold in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. According to Lucien Lachance the dagger was never used before. Lucien gave it the Hero of Kvatch as a gift from the Dark Brotherhood. Later, the Night Mother placed an enchantment on it.[1]

Fourth Era[edit | edit source]

In 4E 201, it reappears as a unique one-handed dagger carried by Astrid, who is, then, the leader of the Dark Brotherhood. Later, the Last Dragonborn received it as a reward.[2]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Skyrim's version of the Blade of Woe is dramatically different from its counterpart from Oblivion. It more closely resembles Sufferthorn, as it not only has any similar shape, but it also damages Health.
  • Skyrim's Blade of Woe is the only weapon in the game that can be upgraded without an ingot.
