For this blade in other games, see Blade of Woe.

"And to prove my... sincerity, I have prayed for a contract. You lead this family now. I give you the Blade of Woe, so that you can see it through. You must kill... Me."
―Astrid[src]

The Blade of Woe is a unique dagger carried by Astrid, leader of the Dark Brotherhood. Higher attribute-wise than the Daedric dagger, the Blade of Woe has 6 base uses. The amount of charge consumed by striking with the dagger lowers as Destruction level increases. The blade can be tempered at any moment using a grindstone, so long as Arcane Blacksmith from the Smithing skill tree has been learned.

Acquisition

  • It is a quest reward in the Dark Brotherhood quest: Death Incarnate
  • With the Misdirection Perk it can be pickpocketed from Astrid, making it possible to obtain a second Blade of Woe. It should be noted that in order to possess both Blades of Woe, Astrid must be pickpocketed at anytime prior to killing the body double for Emperor Titus Mede II in the Dark Brotherhood quest: To Kill An Empire. When stolen, the Blade of Woe can have the stolen tag removed by selling it to a fence and buying it back.
  • the blade can be obtained by fighting and defeating astrid in the abandoned shack by looting it off her body, along with the dark brotherhood armor and the shack key.

Usefulness

With a Smithing skill of 100 alone (no smithing enhancing potions or items) it is possible to obtain base damages of upwards of 60 with relative ease. Combined with the Assassin's Blade Perk and Shrouded Hand Wraps/Shrouded Gloves sneak attacks can easily reach 1800+ damage. This makes it one of the most powerful weapons in the game in the right hands. It's also affected by the steel smithing perk, meaning that with the perk it can be improved twice as much. Also, it is possible that it is the most powerful dagger in the game, on the basis of damage when you improve it on grindstones and with the use of fortify smithing potions; there is no comparison in regards to a more powerful dagger, save Mehrune's Razor.

Bugs

  •  PS3   This weapon is not affected by the "Dual Flurry Perk", retaining standard dagger attack speed, while your other weapon still receives the speed buff.
  •  PC   360   Returning to the old Dark Brotherhood sanctuary, there may be a second Blade of Woe.
  •  360   - If Dark Brotherhood is completed after Main Questline is completed, Blade of Woe may be unretrievable.
