Hi all, Atvelonis here. As we discussed in Saturday's moot, we're considering holding another holiday raffle hosted by the administration, similar to the one we held in 2015. During that raffle, users simply picked a number from 1–100, and the winning number was randomly selected. That worked fine, but I personally feel that any future raffles should be somehow tied to editing in order to encourage some activity on the mainspace.
However, for an editing-based raffle to be successful, we need to design it in a way that encourages useful edits to the wiki, not a bunch of spam. The difficult here is making it a fair competition. We could decide the winner based purely off of the number of edits made during this period, but that would bias it rather heavily towards people who do lots of smaller maintenance edits, completely leaving out editors who make larger content additions.
Amulet of Kings suggested during the moot that we base it off of edit size in bytes (which is recorded for every edit) rather than edit count. I think this is a good start, but I want to know what everybody else thinks. Should there be any additional factors involved? Should edit size be a factor at all? Should image uploads be given more emphasis? Who should be eligible, and how long should the contest run? And so on.
Regardless, I would be fine with paying for the winner's prize. If you have any thoughts on this, please speak your mind below. I want to use this time to work out all of the details of the contest so that there is no ambiguity when we actually start it. This thread is for discussion only, so please do not vote at this time. Thanks!
