Sorry, what I meant by "for fun" makes more sense for those who roleplay. When RPing, different people have different "levels" i.e. how literate they are and likewise, the expected literacy level of those they roleplay with. Some people are fine to mix it up with beginners, others prefer to write with more advanced players to further hone their skills (most advanced sites even set a minimum word limit you have to attain). When I said "for fun", I meant that the RP is more light-hearted in nature rather being a serious storyline with expected literacy levels and intentions of furthering one's personal writing skills, or even having "RP rules" (i.e. No X race characters or min. 100 words reply) in place.
If you're someone with greater intentions for your RPs rather than just passing the time, then yes, moving to a purely RP community is the ideal and preferred solution. But if you're just mucking about, with characters you don't even care about and such, doing little RPs here as a past-time is fine. That's the thing though- in the past, the RPs weren't just a past-time or break from editing, it became the purpose of the forums. That is going too far, hence why I agree with the restrictions. But chasing people off who weren't even taking the RP seriously and were genuinely using it as a break from wiki stuff (I can vouch in Kora's case that she's been helping a lot in terms of answering questions in the forum) is mean, especially when a compromise of some sort could be reached if people are willing to compromise.
It's no hassle on our part- we don't have to get involved in their 'CTs' which could even be held in the RP board (why would we when we don't RP). They can do their voting thing and when it's done, just message a forum mod or admin and get the topics rotated. Or if the same topics are voted to stay, then no one has to do anything. It really isn't any skin off our back, and while the restrictions remain in place, the topics being dragged out can be closed with new ones taking their place so things stay fresh. Compromise :)
