I know! I'm level 20-30 or something and I still don't know if I'm ready to face him, so I've just got the beacon in my inventory. Luckily, now I have Fus Ro Dah, full, so I can probably FUS RO DAH his little necromancer butt. I dunno. I just don't think the quest is worth it, I use maces, and Molag Bal's is quite powerful, and to open up the whole sword perk would be quite useless
you can sneak up behind them and take their briar hearts by poisoning them with well....poison and paralysing poison, and watch them go
"agh!" and then watch them fall down dead
i use arrows and a very high sneak skill
you can use auriel's bow if you got it in the dawnguard storyline
I think that is that MORA guy with the tentacles in the black book
demension.
Or Miraak from the same quest.

I don’t know about you guys, but the Forgemaster absolutely dunked on me. I was about lvl 25 and was mainly a two handed character. Took me a good few reloads to beat him, even with the Ebony Blade healing me. I had beaten a few centurions before so my expedition were low... I was unpleasantly surprised.
This was on my first expert character ;-;

The Forgemaster levels with you (from 24~50), so that might be part of the issue.
It might be helpful to note that it has a 50% Weakness to Frost Damage.
Otherwise, if you're still having trouble, it would be ideal to acquire the Spellbreaker Shield before fighting the Forgemaster, as it should help against its fire-breath "Shouts".
