When fighting vampires, I dual-wield the Mace of Molag Bal, for the irony of using their creator's weapon to destroy them, and the Dawnbreaker because it makes them explode.
An Ebony Bow I got at level 20-25 and a Glass Dagger of Burning I found in Nightingale Hall.
Honestly, I normally will attempt to fight the enemy myself with destruction spells, if that fails, I will then use illusion spells (hush and invis) to easily do repeat sneak attacks. if I don't feel like doing that, or if it's not possible, my level 100 summoner skill that I got in 2 hours comes in real handy when a few summons can put down just about any enemy with ease, but what's the fun in that?
One Handed + whatever spell I need (usually healing or candlelight), or when I'm feeling like a real manly Nord, a shield. It really depends on the character though, I'll almost always have a sword+magic combo on Bretons and oftentimes on Dunmer too, but my Nords rarely use any magic besides perhaps basic restoration, and that's when I'm only lightly RPing.
Regardless of the race I play as (Generally a Khajiit, but there were a few Nords and Dunmer in there somewhere), I always end up slipping into a sneaky, Light Armor character with very high Illusion skills and One-handed/Marksman skills. I like to use the Nightingale Blade or the Ghostblade (Both of which all but require me to spend so much time boosting Smithing, Enchanting, and Alchemy when I could be doing actually useful stuff just to make the damn things useful, simply because I like how they look). For ranged abilities, I generally find myself sticking to Crossbows as opposed to any other Bow, because I spend so much time making Bolts instead of Arrows (7000+ Bolts when I last checked), and I just feel more confident with a Crossbow compared to anything else.
I hear ya on the crossbow. Flat trajectory is easier to manage, heavy impact staggers opponents. Best part is the kill cam in melee range where ya use it as a bludgeon! Can't imagine crafting bolts tho, when you can buy the sweet bolts that go boom at Fort Dawguard.
I prefer one-handed swords over most weopons as they still allow you to use magic. My favorite sword is a deadric sword or Harkon sword.
my Orchish warhammer has 43 damage and its unenchanted, why are here no weapons with more than 40 damage unenchanted
sword with an occasional shield( auriels shield or spell breaker) and bow with random dual cast magic in between
when I use a sword i will do a 50/50 of just a sword and a sword and shield
Mace & Shield. I usually play as an Orc, so that's my preferred weapon combo.
