my current character is a Breton Necromancer/BattleMage.
they can be anything, but you gotta be careful when you go cross classes.
A breton can be anything, really, except for a pure thief/assassin
You could make a sword and board warrior, a pure mage, a spellsword, a battlemage etc.
But still, for maximum tankiness and to avoid dying, I'd suggest something with smithing (for daedric/ dragonscale armor), alteration (for the magic resist), light/heavy armor, block (to deflect arrow and spell) and one hand. Get destruction for ranged combat so you can hold a shield in your off hand. Also, get enchanting to make fortify destruction 100% armor (there's a need to spam destruction for long range late game). Also, level up alchemy for "snakeblood" and be a werewolf for disease resist. If not keen on alchemy and werewolf, be a vampire and make boots of fire resist.

Uh, if you are keen on thief/assassin, you still must level up the above, except for block and destruction, instead, go for illusion (invisibility) and archery
