Bounty is part of the Justice System in The Elder Scrolls Online. The size of a bounty depends on the severity of the crime committed. It is measured in gold, and is represented by the white bar in the player's Infamy Meter.
Dealing with a bounty[]
The player can either wait for the bounty to decrease and eventually go away, or pay it off. If the player chooses to pay off the bounty, all stolen items will also be removed from their inventory.
Guards will approach the player in an attempt to make them pay their bounty. If they refuse, the guards will attempt to kill the player, and the bounty held will be increased. If one doesn't have enough money to pay off the bounty, all the gold from the player's inventory will be removed, and the bounty will be reduced by that amount.
Fences are also capable of clearing off bounty if one is willing to pay them.
Another way for one to clear their bounty without paying gold is to use an Edict. Edicts can be used to clear both bounties and Heat, making them a very valuable item to have for people that often commit crimes in a short span of time. This, however, is best used when one has committed enough serious crimes to amass a substantial bounty, for depending on the type, they are capable of clearing from 500 to 100,000 worth of gold with one use.
Heat[]
The bounty system is also directly linked to the heat system, which informs the player of how the guards will react when they notice them. They will either approach the player peacefully and ask for the bounty to be paid off or attack the player if their heat is high enough. Heat is represented by the red bar of the Infamy Meter and reduces much faster than the bounty.
Infamy Meter[]
The Infamy Meter will become visible once a player acquires a bounty. It is divided into three sections, each representing the player's current status regarding their infamy, and what measures the guards will take to deal with them. The white bar represents the bounty, while the red one the current heat. The sword in the center signifies whether the guards will simply apprehend the criminal or, if it is colored red, attempt to kill them on sight.
