Beliefs and history[]

Long ago, the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe created the Plane of Existence.

Soon after, he created the Eight Divines:

Every Divine received a Woodcutter's Axe from him to use to chop firewood. He trained them all in the art of Woodcutting.

He then created the planet Nirn, where all mortals reside. He scattered many Woodcutter's Axes throughout the continents, mainly in Tamriel.

After doing so, he created mortals. They soon learned how to use his gifts of Woodcutter's Axes to their benefit.

The Almighty Woodcutter's Axe worked for many years to perfect his creation. After a very long time, his project was complete; Nirn and her peoples could at last be sustained without his constant assistance. He commanded his servants, the Eight Divines, to oversee his handiwork while he rested.

They did so without hesitation. During this time, life on Nirn flourished; the peoples of Nirn grouped together and began to create their own settlements. Over time, these societies further separated, leaving tens, then hundreds, then thousands of species. A few notable examples are Men, Mer, and Beastfolk.

However, forgetting the ways of the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe, these creatures began to fight over land and resources, which led to the formation of numerous different states on the continents of Nirn, the majority of which were in Tamriel. At one point, they developed their own versions of the Woodcutter's Axe, which they then used to slaughter each other further. This upset the Divines, who proceeded to wake the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe from his ancient slumber for assistance.

In his great wisdom, the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe responded by slowly cooling Nirn, hoping to extinguish some of the more fiery-hearted creatures. This particularly affected the continent of Atmora, home of Men, because of its extremely high latitude. The boldest of the Atmorans built great ships and sailed south across the Sea of Ghosts in hope of discovering a warmer land―Tamriel. Over the next several hundred years, a massive population of Men immigrated to Tamriel.

They were initially welcomed by the residents of Tamriel, Snow Elves, but the Elves soon became aware of the amount of Men that migrated to their land, and the fact that Men bred much faster than Mer. They retaliated by hunting down as many humans as they could, and burning their cities to the ground, most notably Saarthal.

The Almighty Woodcutter's Axe saw this, and took pity upon the humans. One night, he descended from the heavens in the form of a massive Woodcutter's Axe to Nirn, where he encountered an Atmoran by the name of Ysgramor, and his two sons, Yngol and Ylgar. He told Ysgramor and his sons to return to Atmora and gather an army to reconquer Tamriel. They obeyed, and soon returned to Tamriel with an army: the legendary Five Hundred Companions. That action led to the rise of men; and the populations of Elves, specifically Snow Elves, began to decrease significantly. The Almighty Woodcutter's Axe continued to cool the planet until virtually all life on Atmora had shifted to Tamriel.

The Almighty Woodcutter's Axe settled down for a long rest once more, and commanded the Divines to again oversee Nirn in his stead. Many years passed with the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe in deep slumber. When he awoke, it was the Second Era in the eyes of mortals. As he scanned Nirn from above, one man caught his eye―A Nord, living in the kingdom of Skyrim.

The Almighty Woodcutter's Axe came to him in a storm one night, calling himself Wulfharth, and taught the man (who was planning an attack on Old Hrol'dan) the Way of the Voice. Soon after, the man used his new-found power to shout down the walls of the city, which earned him the name "Talos," meaning "Stormcrown."

Talos was later named "Tiber Septim," as the Emperor of Cyrodiil. By 2E 897, Tiber had conquered all of Tamriel. His glorious achievements impressed the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe, who subsequently decided to lengthen Tiber's lifespan so that he might live to see even more glory. In 3E 38, the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe made a mind-blowing decision―to make Tiber Septim one of the Divines. As Tiber lay on his deathbed, he began his ascent to godhood. Upon his arrival in the Plane of Woodcutters, where the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe and the Divines resided, the Eight Divines became the Nine Divines.

It was at that point when the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe fell into the deepest slumber, where none, not even the Divines, could wake him. Since then, with Skyrim's Civil War raging on, the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe has made few appearances in Nirn or elsewhere. The people of Tamriel have largely forgotten who their true creator was, and now, for the most part, worship the Nine Divines in his stead.

However, the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe's legacy lives on in the lives of Woodcutters all throughout Tamriel. May their Woodcutting bring them great fortune and longevity, and may they pass on their knowledge to others who will continue to worship the Almighty Woodcutter's Axe, and any Woodcutter's Axe that exists.
