Dirge is a gruff Imperial associate of the Thieves Guild in Riften. His brother Maul is Maven Black-Briar's right-hand man.

Background[]

"I don't care if you're best buddies with the Guild Master, I'll still smash in your skull if you try anything."
―Dirge[src]

Dirge works as a bouncer for the Ragged Flagon, the underground tavern that the Guild uses as a base of operations. In the Ragged Flagon, he can be found in the front of the bar next to the sign on the bridge, or sitting down at one of the tables eating. He is quite muscular and never sleeps.

Interactions[]

Dirge is considered impolite. If the Dragonborn asks about his name, he explains that it is "the last thing you hear before they put you in the ground," and then asks if they have a problem with his name. He can be persuaded or intimidated for a bottle of Black-Briar Mead. He can also be asked about The Ratway Warrens and Esbern during "A Cornered Rat." He many times passively threatens the Dragonborn with death, telling them about the last person that messed with Vekel the Man.

If it is one of the Dragonborn's first times inside The Ragged Flagon, dialogue options will not show when interacted with, instead he will just threaten the Dragonborn with death, in only a couple of different sentences.

If the Dragonborn is being chased by a character or any Riften Guards, they will follow him into the Thieves Guild, and if they then go into the Ragged Flagon, where Dirge can be found, the entire Thieves Guild will then begin to attack the intruders. During this, Dirge, unlike the other members of the Thieves Guild, can die in combat, while the others only get knocked-down or stunned.

Equipment[]

Dirge most often has a horker loaf in his inventory and usually eats bread when not at his post. His inventory includes leather armor, boots, and bracers. He also has a steel war axe and a randomly generated item.

Dialogue[]

Why do they call you Dirge? "They call me Dirge, 'cause I'm the last thing you hear before they put you in the ground."

About your name... "Why? You think it's funny or something?"
Remind me, why do they call you Dirge? "I already told you. They call me Dirge, 'cause I'm the last thing you hear before they put you in the ground."
No way. That name would scare anyone. (Persuade) "Oh yeah? I think so too. You're pretty smart. Hey, here. Have one on the house." (The Dragonborn receives a bottle of Black-Briar mead) ("Good. Now shut up and get out of my face." – If the persuasion fails.)
I think it's hilarious. You got a problem? (Intimidate) "No, no. Sorry if I sounded so mean there. My brother always said I have a big mouth. Here, have one on me." (The Dragonborn receives a bottle of Black-Briar mead) ("Yeah, my problem is I'm too tired to punch your face in." – If the intimidation fails.)
Forget I mentioned it. "Already did."

I met your brother. "Maul? Yeah. That jerk works for Maven Black-Briar now. Left me down here watching this garbage heap. I guess he's better at all that talking stuff anyway. I'd just mess everything up."

Spread the Love[]

Here, brother. Blessings of Mara upon you. "I think I have some more of these padding my mattress."

A Cornered Rat[]

I'm looking for an old guy, hiding out somewhere in Riften. "That's interesting. Why do I care? You want a drink, or maybe just a few broken bones?"

I need to talk to him. I'm a friend. His life's in danger. (Persuade)
"A friend, huh? Well... then it's probably okay if I tell you." (Success)
"He lives somewhere in the Ratway Warrens. Must be crazy or desperate to live down there. Maybe both."
"I guess you don't hear too well. I never heard of this "friend" of yours." (Failure)
Maybe this will help your memory. (Bribe)
"You know what? I think I do know the guy you're talking about." (Success)
"He lives somewhere in the Ratway Warrens. Must be crazy or desperate to live down there. Maybe both."
"Maybe it would. If you had it." (Insufficient Gold)
Are you going to tell me, or am I going to have to beat it out of you? (Intimidate)
"Easy there. I don't want that kind of trouble. Guy ain't worth it." (Success)
"He lives somewhere in the Ratway Warrens. Must be crazy or desperate to live down there. Maybe both."
"Yeah. That's what it's going to take." (Failure)
I can break some of your bones if that's what it's going to take... (Brawl)

If the Dragonborn is in the Thieves Guild:

Know of an old guy hiding out in Riften, name of Esbern? "Don't know his name, but there is a guy like that hiding out down here. Paid plenty for nobody to know about it. You're not the first person to come in here asking about him, either, so be careful."

"He lives somewhere in the Ratway Warrens. Must be crazy or desperate to live down there. Maybe both."

If the Dragonborn is friends with Dirge:

I'm looking for an old guy hiding out in Riften, probably in the Ratway. "Yeah, I think I know who you mean. He's paid good money for nobody to know he's down here, but I guess I can tell you."

"He lives somewhere in the Ratway Warrens. Must be crazy or desperate to live down there. Maybe both."

That old guy hiding out down here... Where does he live? "Down in the Ratway Warrens. Nice place, if you don't mind the stench, rats, and assorted lowlifes as neighbors."

Conversations[]

Delvin Mallory

Dirge: You need to tell your boys to place [sic] [Do not change this to play. This misspelled word is how it appears in-game.] nice, Delvin. Almost threw two of them into the well last night." Delvin Mallory: "They aren't my boys. Do I look like the leadin' type?" Dirge: "You know what I mean. Tell your boss that rough is rough, but when someone pulls a dagger fun [sic] [Do not change this to dagger, fun. This misspelled word is how it appears in-game.] time is over." Delvin: "I'll pass it along."

'Delvin: "Good news. I found that dwarven hammer you were looking for." Dirge: "You did? Thanks. I [sic] [Do not change this to I'll. This misspelled word is how it appears in-game.] get you the rest of your coin by tomorrow." Delvin: "Yeah, funny think about that. The price was a hundred higher than I expected." Dirge: "Vekel [sic] [Do not change this to Delvin. This misspelled word is how it appears in-game.], you have no shame. I'll get you the rest like I said. I want that hammer."

Vekel the Man

Vekel: "Dirge! Did you take out the trash like I asked?" Dirge: "Yeah. Threw it in the lake like you said." Vekel: "Tell me you looked through the trash before you did that." Dirge: "Take it easy, Vekel. How long we known each other? Yeah. I checked it. All the stuff is in the safe."

Dirge: "Job's done, boss. Gave the package to her just like you said." Vekel: "Good. Did she say anything we need to know?" Dirge: "Yep. She said that the Jarl was planning a surprise raid on us, but she talked her out of it. Said she saved us a lot of trouble." Vekel: "That she did. Very good. I'll tell Brynjolf."

Tonilia

Tonilia: "I need you to do me a favor, Dirge." Dirge: "Sure, Ton. You know I'm good for it." Tonilia: "There's a new guard nosing around the meadery. Can you do something about it?" Dirge: "Gladly. He won't bother you anymore, I promise."

Dirge: "Hey Ton, you shouldn't cheat on Vekel. He's a good guy." Tonilia: "What are you talking about?" Dirge: "Come on, everyone knows about you and Brynjolf." Tonilia: Well, everyone's wrong. Now why don't you just shut up about it."

Quotes[]

  • "Even if you're one of us, you better not cause trouble."
  • "Stay out of trouble, or there's gonna be trouble."

Trivia[]

  • Even after the Dragonborn becomes the Guildmaster, he will still say, "I don't care if you're best buddies with the Guildmaster. I'll still smash your skull in if you try anything."
  • During a conversation with Delvin Mallory involving the acquisition of a Dwarven hammer, Delvin attempts to cheat Dirge out of an extra 100 septims. Dirge then says, "Vekel, you have no shame."
  • Curiously, Dirge's brother Maul is listed as a Nord in-game while Dirge is an Imperial.
  • Dirge is voiced by Popeye Vogelsang, who also voices his brother Maul.[source?]
