Background[]

I need to locate Verandis Ravenwatch and find out if he can tell me more about Baron Montclair and where he might be hiding. He may also know more about what set Montclair on this path of destruction.

Walkthrough[]

Upon completing "Shornhelm Divided," High King Emeric will ask you to go after Reezal-Jul while he sorts out the problems Baron Wylon Montclair is stirring up in other regions. He will ask you to go speak with Count Verandis Ravenwatch in Ravenwatch Castle to see if he has discovered anything of note.

Head to Ravenwatch Castle. You will walk in on Verandis and his retainer Gwendis feeding on one of the Count's retainers; these people are vampires. Speak with the count and he will confirm that they are indeed vampires, but that they are good vampires who only feed on willing subjects. When asked, he will tell you that there is more to Montclair than just the ambition to rule Rivenspire, and he will ask you to come with him. Follow him, and he will lead you to a potion that will allow you to see his memories; he thinks there might be a clue there as to Montclair's plans. You can speak with Verandis about the potion and its effects, but this will have no effect on further quest progression.

Drink the potion. You will arrive at a scene where Baroness Leila Montclair, Duke Montclair's wife, lies on her deathbed; her husband and daughter are begging her to accept Reezal-Jul's help, but she will not. Baron Montclair will call Verandis (you) aside to talk; speak with him and he will ask you to turn Leila into a vampire. You can either refuse the request or offer to ask Leila whether she wants this. If you refuse this, [?]. If you accept, go talk to Leila. She will refuse the request, after which the real Count Verandis will tell you he has vague memories of talking to someone else, but he cannot remember who. Head out of the room and you will run into Reezal-Jul; talk to him and he will tell you about an Ayleid artifact he can use to cure the baroness. Since the countess doesn't want his help, he will ask you to use the artifact to save her.

After this, the scene changes to after Leila is cured. After some celebration, she will ask you to come talk to her in private. The real Verandis does not remember this conversation; speak with him and he will tell you to explore this moment and see what you can learn about Montclair's turn to evil. There are three people to talk to now; Baron Montclair will be at the table in front of you; he will tell you that he is grateful for the stone and its effects, but will mention that the Argonian never mentioned it to him. Down the stairs, you will find Reezal-Jul, who will tell you that he feels the relic calling out to him, and that he found it among King Ranser's belongings. He thinks it is part of a greater whole, and is researching it in ancient texts. Three phrases stood out to him: "Life, Death, Crag." Finally, there is Baroness Leila Montclair. She is sick again, and thinks she needs another helping of the stone. She thinks the stone is probably part of a larger whole, and that she will need the whole relic to be cured.

Once you have spoken with all three people, head for the study in the west of the ground floor. There, the Argonian has laid out Translated Ayleid Texts; these texts will mention something the Ayleids used to attain immortality, and that only a Vestige can contain its power. They set up camp somewhere in the mountains and hidden an important tome there. After reading this, speak with the real Verandis and he will tell you that the text is about The Doomcrag; you will then be taken to a memory there.

Head straight ahead and you will find the people of House Montclair discussing leaving their guards behind and continuing by themselves. Head with them into the Doomcrag and you will be set upon by a horde of skeletons. Defeat them, then head on. Once you reach the middle tier, speak with Baron Montclair. He will tell you that he will do anything to save his wife, and he will shame you for not turning her into a vampire. Head further up and you will be set upon by a Bone Colossus; kill it and head onward. At the peak, you will find the door to the relic chamber. Before you enter, you can talk to Baron Montclair and tell him that something does not feel right; the relic does not seem to be all that benign. He will ignore your comments though. Either way, head into the relic chamber and talk to the baron again there. You will once again warn him against using the artifact, but he will not listen. They will then start the ritual to heal Leila, but she will remark that something feels very wrong. Baron Montclair will ask you to touch the relic to help them; do so, and you will see the ritual do something to the Count, his daughter and Reezal-Jul. Leila will be kept alive, but will be in incredible pain and will ask you to end her life. After you do so, Montclair will attack you, but Gwendis will appear just in time to save you. You will then wake up from the memory.

After waking up, talk to Verandis and he will inform you that the ritual has made Baron Montclair and the others into vampires, imbued with the power of the relic. This will finish the quest and start the next one, "The Blood-Splattered Shield."
