Eplear Camoran was a Bosmer king remembered as the founder of the Camoran Dynasty in year zero of the First Era (1E 0).[1][2]

The establishment of the Camoran Dynasty marked both the beginning of the First Era and the official recording of historical time in Tamriel.[3][4] His success in uniting the often divided Bosmeri clans is celebrated as one of the greatest political and military achievements in the history of Tamriel.[5]

History[]

Prior to Eplear’s reign, the Bosmer lived in disparate tribal groups with little central organization. Legends hold that Eplear brought these clans together, forming the first unified kingdom of Valenwood. His dynasty would endure in various forms throughout the eras, even after Valenwood came under the influence of external powers such as the Second Empire.[6]

Myths and Legends[]

Bosmeri tradition preserves several mythic accounts of Eplear’s rise. One tale claims he was once an ox-herd who vowed to win the hand of a merchant’s daughter by turning the plains of Valen into forest. He is said to have bought her acorns and planted them wherever his oxen grazed, causing the forests of Valenwood to spread.[7]

Other versions describe spriggans recognizing him as a great wizard and crowning him with their blessing, or credit him with planting the first of Valenwood’s sacred graht-oaks. Some Bosmer consider these stories symbolic rather than literal.[8]

Fragments of the poetic cycle known as the Coronation of Eplear describe his ascent in allegorical terms. Tribes are said to have brought him gifts of bones, hides, feathers, and jewels, while he fashioned his throne from living wood and consumed the heart of a Great-Bird-of-the-Hunt to gain sovereignty.[9]

Legacy[]

The Camoran Dynasty founded by Eplear is one of the oldest continuous royal lines in Tamriel. Later Bosmeri monarchs frequently invoked his example as the archetype of the sacred forest king who united his people and ruled in harmony with nature. His deeds also set the precedent for the reckoning of historical eras in Tamrielic chronology.
