Food is a category of consumable items that temporarily alter the player's stats. This could mean replenishing or increasing one's maximum Health, Stamina, or Magicka, or changing other aspects such as magic resistance, or bolstering attributes. In The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, food is used for alchemy, whereas in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it is used for cooking.
Usefulness and aesthetic
Food isn't required for survival and exists primarily for aesthetics, however some raw ingredients can be cooked into useful items.
In Skyrim, cooked food items are easy to produce in large quantities, and seem powerful early on, especially if potions are in short supply. At later levels, only a few recipes remain useful, such as Elsweyr Fondue or foods that increase stamina over a period of time. Eating more than one food will not stack their effects. Most cooking requires salt as an ingredient. Cooking is not a skill, and the player is given all recipes by default. It does not contribute to leveling. The Elder Scrolls V: Hearthfire adds some raw ingredients and recipes, which are most notable for not all having .5 weight and for some being "baked" rather than being cooked. Consuming raw food in Oblivion and Morrowind raises alchemy, as well as possibly unveiling hidden effects from that item.
