Frea is a Skaal shaman living in the Skaal Village on Solstheim. She is the daughter of Storn Crag-Strider, and is working to free her people from the influence of Miraak.

Background

When talking about her childhood, Frea says that she was an angry child and that the previous chieftain taught her battle skills so that she could put that fire to good use. She also says that one day her mother went to gather firewood in a blizzard and never returned. During the final quest in the Dragonborn storyline, Frea will admit to the Dragonborn that being the shaman of the Skaal was not the path she chose, and that she was hoping instead to be a hunter or chieftain. However, she knows it is her place and accepts it.

The Temple of Miraak

Upon first meeting her at the Temple of Miraak, she is attempting to help her fellow villagers escape Miraak's Curse whilst her father Storn, the Skaal's shaman, protects what remains of the free-willed villagers from suffering the same fate.

Frea will then accompany the Dragonborn through the temple, helping with the fight against the draugr and cultists. Frea gives advice to the Dragonborn and acts almost like a guide to them. For instance, she makes the Dragonborn run through a sprung trap because she thinks that they will have a better chance of survival. 

The Fate of the Skaal

At the end of "The Temple of Miraak" quest and the start of this one, she leads the Dragonborn back to her village to talk to her father.

At the Summit of Apocrypha

Upon returning to Solstheim upon completion of this quest, Frea approaches the Dragonborn.

Show: The Temple of Miraak

At the Temple of Miraak: "You there. What brings you to this place? Why are you here?" Who are you? "I am Frea of the Skaal. I am here to either save my people, or avenge them." Save them from what? "I am unsure. Something has taken control of most of the people on Solstheim. It makes them forget themselves, and work on these horrible creations that corrupt the Stones, the very land itself. My father Storn, our shaman, says Miraak has returned to Solstheim, but that is impossible." This Miraak tried to have me killed. "Then you and I both have reason to see what lies beneath us. Let us go. There is nothing more I can do here. The Tree Stone and my friends are beyond my help for now. We need to find a way into the temple below. What do you know about Miraak? "His story is as old as Solstheim itself. He served the dragons before their fall from power, as most did. A priest in their order. But unlike most, he turned against them. He made his own path, and his actions cost him dearly. The stories say he sought to claim Solstheim for himself, and the dragons destroyed him for it" You're here by yourself? "There are few of us unaffected by this curse. My father Storn, the shaman, protects them in the village. I fashioned an amulet to guard me against whatever has taken hold of the Skaal, but it is the only one of its kind. If I cannot find a way to save them, there is no hope for our people." Tell me about your people. The Skaal "We have lived on Solstheim for many generations. Our people are tied to the land itself. We try to serve the All-Maker, to live in balance with nature, instead of exploiting it as others would." What is the Tree Stone?: "It is an ancient stone of power, a connection to the All-Maker. It represents one of the aspects of nature, a part of the All-Maker's creation. There are other stones around Solstheim. I fear for what has happened to them..." While going through the Temple: "Are you ready to help me now? We should not delay." "We should check these rooms for supplies before heading further into the temple." "Take your time. I shall follow when you are ready." "We must be careful in these ruins. Traps can be anywhere, and there will likely be many." "Miraak was trying to take power here, and protect himself in the process." "I do not wish to imagine the kinds of things that happened in this chamber. Who were the poor souls trapped in these cages? What torture did they suffer at Miraak's hands? Was it in service to the dragons, or for his own purposes? Look up there. I think I see something. The stairs are knocked out. I have no doubt you can find a way up. You never know, you may find something of value up there. I shall look around. We can proceed when you are ready." "I am not going down there. It would be foolish to attempt it. You have a much better chance than I to make it through these traps. I have no doubt that lever turns these blades off. I shall wait here for now." "Thank you. Miraak took great pains to make it difficult to reach him, it seems. Let us hope that is the last of these traps." "I do not know what it is Miraak learned that gave him reason to turn on his masters. But his path seems to have been a cruel one. I wonder if we will find some answers to what happened so long ago." "Interesting. This may be worth exploring." "How much deeper can this be? I had been told that Miraak's power was great, but to have built so large a temple... It cannot be much further now. I feel it in my bones." "I had heard Miraak had turned against the Dragon Cult, but to display the remains in such a manner as this... It is no wonder the dragons razed his temple to the ground. Seeing the remains hung up like trophies must have enraged them to no end." "Something feels wrong. Brace yourself!" "Dead end? Impossible. There must be something more! Look around. I will let you know if I find anything in the dining area." "I knew it! A secret passage in the dining area just opened up. This must be it. Let us move quickly." "I wonder if there is something here that tells the story of Miraak... Nothing but ruined books." "I do not recognize this statuary. We passed by a few of them earlier, but they are becoming more frequent as we get further in. I do not like this place. It almost looks as if these statues will come to life at any moment. It looks like there is only one way to proceed. I leave the honor of pulling that handle to you. I do not want to put my hand anywhere near the mouth of that statue." "It is eerily quiet. I do not suspect that will be the case the further we go. Be on your guard." "There are dark magics at work here. Ready yourself. This book... It seems wrong, somehow... Here, yet... not. It may be what we seek." After reading the Black Book: Waking Dreams: "What happened to you? You read the book and then... It seemed as though you were not really here. I could see you, but also see through you!" I'm not really sure. I saw Miraak on a dragon. "Where? Where is he? Can we reach him? Can we kill him?" Somehow, reading this book took me to where he was. "This is a dangerous thing, then. We should return to my village, and show this to my father. Perhaps Storn can make sense of what is going on. Come, there looks to be a way out through here."

Show: The Fate of the Skaal

Between the Temple of Miraak and Skaal Village: "You see that green light? That comes from the Wind Stone, where my people work against their will. They must be freed soon." When approaching the village: "The village is just ahead. Storn has used his magic to raise a barrier around it, protecting the few of us left. That the barrier is still there is a good sign. After Frea speaks to her father: "If anyone can help us now, it is you." For a shaman, you fight pretty well. Who trained you? "It was Skaf the Giant, our former chieftain, who taught me the ways of battle. He was a great bear of a man, and a fearsome warrior. I used to be terrified of him when I was a little girl. I was a restless and angry child, and Skaf taught me swordplay so that I could, as he used to say, "put that fire to good use." He was a great man and a good leader. I miss him dearly." Where is your mother? "She died when I was very young. She was caught in a terrible snowstorm while returning home from gathering firewood. You must understand that, for Skaal, life is a constant hardship. We take nothing for granted. We cannot afford to. Between the wolves, the weather and the threats in the south, even a simple task like gathering wood for the fire can turn deadly in an instant." Then why stay here? Why not live somewhere safer? "We are bound to this land, like a great pine with roots that run deep as the tree is tall. I know it must seem strange to you, but for us, the thought of leaving our village is equally strange. The land and the Skaal are one. There is no other way to say it." Sooner or later, death comes for us all. "We Skaal do not fear death. We know we will return to the All-Maker and be born anew. Life never truly ends. Death is just a passage from one form to the next." "All-Maker guide you."

Show: At the Summit of Apocrypha

In the Skaal Village: "I can feel it. The Tree Stone is free again. The Oneness of the land is restored. Does that mean... is it over? Is Miraak defeated?" It's over. Miraak is dead. "Then my father's sacrifice... it was not in vain. He died to free us. Tell me... was it the only way? Did he need to die?" I killed Miraak, but Hermaeus Mora is still out there. "It was Miraak who threatened Solstheim. With him gone, Herma-Mora has been foiled once again. Tell me, though... my father's death... was it necessary? Was there no other way to destroy Miraak?" I couldn't have defeated Miraak without Storn's help. "Then... it was the All-Maker's will, as he said. I know I should not doubt it. But it is good to hear, all the same. Thank you." Hermaeus Mora killed Storn, remember. Not Miraak: "I know. The Skaal will not forget this. Storn's death will become another of many tales of Herma-Mora's treachery." Hermaeus Mora wouldn't have helped me without Storn's sacrifice: "Yes, his "help" which did not require him to kill my father. Such is the way of Herma-Mora, the eternal enemy of the Skaal." Storn didn't die for nothing. Miraak will never threaten Solstheim again. "Thank you. Whatever your other reasons for acting, you have done the Skaal a great service. We will not forget what you've done." Frea will then continue: "One more thing, Skaal-friend, if you will." "I know it is not my place but... may I offer a word of advice... of warning?" Sure, what is it? "As shaman of the Skaal, I am charged with the spiritual well-being of my people. While you are not of the Skaal, you are Skaal-friend, and so I give you this warning. Herma-Mora forced you to serve him in order to defeat Miraak. Do not let him lure you further down that path. The All-Maker made you Dragonborn for a higher purpose. Do not forget that. Walk with the All-Maker, Skaal-friend." I don't need your advice. "I understand. Walk with the All-Maker, Dragonborn." If approached again: "My father was a noble man, and a true Skaal." Are you sure you're ready to be Shaman of the Skaal? "I have been preparing for it all my life. There is no question that I'm ready, but..." But what? What is it? "It is not right that I should say this, because I must honor my father's wishes, but this a path I never chose. I always thought that I would be a great hunter, or even the village chieftain." That could still happen, couldn't it? "Hah! Not if Fanari has anything to say about it. When it comes to being chieftain, she is like a wolf with her jaws clamped tight upon a fresh kill. But that's alright. The Skaal need a shaman and I know that is my place." We make a good team. Why not join me for a while? "Join you? You mean leave the village to journey with you and fight at your side?" I'm flattered, but the village is my home. It's very rare for one of the Skaal to leave, and I have responsibilities here. You can trust me. I saved your life remember? (Persuade) "You're right. I suppose the others can get by without me for a while. Very well. If you need my help, seek me out here in the village." I'll make it worth your while (gold): "The land provides all that I need. I have no need for your coins."

Miraak

Frea: "Father! I have returned! There is yet hope!"
Storn: "Frea! What news do you bring? Is there a way to free our people?"
Frea: "No, but I have brought someone who has seen things... He has confirmed that Miraak is indeed behind the suffering of our people."
Storn: "I feared that it would be so."
Frea: "But how is that possible? After all this time..."
Storn: "I fear there is too much we do not yet know."
Frea: "Please, tell Storn what has happened."

The Black Book

Frea: "Father, you must not do this. That book is... wrong. Evil. Against everything that you have taught me my whole life."
Storn: "I must, Frea. It is the only way to free Solstheim forever from Miraak's shadow. There comes a time when everything must change. Nothing that lives remains the same forever. Do not fear for me, my daughter. This is the destiny that the All-Maker has laid out for me."
Frea: "I stand beside you, father, as always."
Storn: "I am ready for whatever the foul master of this book has in store for me."
Hermaeus Mora: "At last, the Skaal yield up their secrets to me."
Storn: "You... liar... gah! ... I won't... not... for you..."
Frea: "Father! No, stop!"
Frea: "Do something!"
Hermaeus Mora: "Dragonborn, you have delivered me the gift I requested. In return, I keep my promise, as befits a Prince of Oblivion: I give you the Word of Power that you need to challenge Miraak. You will be either a worthy opponent or his successor, as the tides of fate decree."
Frea: "Father! What have you done! Go. My father sacrificed himself so that you could destroy Miraak and lift his master's shadow from the land. Go, then. Kill Miraak. Do not fail."
Fanari Strong-Voice: "Goodbye, old friend. We will miss you, but do not worry. Frea will guide us well, thanks to you."
Deor Woodcutter: "Frea... I'm sorry."
Baldor Iron-Shaper: "I... uh... you'll be missed, old man."
Oslaf: "You always protected us. I hope you find peace in the next life. Goodbye, old one."
Aeta: "It can't be... please, All-Maker, send him back to us..."
Wulf Wild-Blood: "Return to the All-Maker, old one. The Skaal will never forget your sacrifice."

Morwen: "I don't really understand what you did, but I trust you did it for the good of the village. So... thank you."
Yrsa: "Oh... so terrible. When will these dark times be over?"
Tharstan: "By the gods... I've never seen anything like it... I, uh... I don't think this will go in my book."
Nikulas: "Frea... what happened? What was that thing? I thought the village was safe now."

Trivia

• She mentions she has an amulet that protects her from the temple's curse.
• She does not have a level cap, and thus will keep accumulating experience indefinitely. She is also invincible and will use restoration spells when her health is low.
• She dual wields a Stalhrim and Nordic War Axe.
• Her default armor is heavy, despite being highly skilled in light armor.
• The name Frea resembles the name of the Norse goddess Freyja, who is associated with love and passion.
• If Lydia fights alongside the Dragonborn during the quest "The Temple of Miraak," her default conversation line changes to, "She fights well enough, for a Skaal." indicating that Lydia might see Frea as somewhat of a rival.
• If the Black Book was not regained by the Dragonborn from Storn then she will have it added to her inventory.
• If Frea is brought along to Nchardak, she has unique lines of dialogue related to the location and the quest. She will also converse freely with Neloth.
• She will dual wield any two weapons in her inventory automatically, without the need to put a pickaxe or a Forsworn weapon in her inventory like the case is with most followers. Thus, even if her initial war axes are removed, she will replace them with whatever weapons the Dragonborn gives her.
• Frea can be exploited as a quest follower during The Temple of Miraak.

•  NX   If she is recruited into the Blades and asked to be a follower, she will still make a comment that she can follow the Dragonborn, but will need to "return to the village" later despite being stationed in Skyrim.
• If Frea is a follower during "The Path of Knowledge" or "The Gardener of Men," there is a period where she will leave but still take up the follower spot. This can be avoided in two ways:
  1. She can be dismissed before reading the black book.
  2. Immediately after returning from Apocrypha, the Dragonborn can head to Skaal Village (where she runs to) and dismiss her before speaking with Storn. Otherwise the Dragonborn will not have a follower until the entire Dragonborn questline is completed.
