Garthar is a Nord thief and a member of the Thieves Guild.

Background

While on his way to Riften, Garthar came upon Vex being attacked by a pack of wolves and assisted her in killing them. Immediately afterward, Vex attempted to rob him. They were locked in combat, but neither could best the other. Impressed, Vex invited him to join the guild.

It is also hinted that Garthar has taken a small liking to Vex when he says, "I wouldn't want to cross blades with Vex again, but I certainly wouldn't mind a bit of a scuffle."

Interactions

He will join the Thieves Guild after the Dragonborn completes three special jobs for the guild. Garthar appears outside of the Ragged Flagon - Cistern when bringing Karliah to the Guild in "The Pursuit", standing watch with Ravyn Imyan at the door, and voicing his fury when it is discovered Mercer has betrayed the guild for his own interests.

Dialogue

"Name's Garthar. Remember it, because you're going to hear a lot about me."

So how did someone like you join the Guild? "It's kind of an amusing tale. I was making my way down the road from Ivarstead towards Riften, and I saw Vex fighting off a couple of wolves."

She needed help with some wolves? "Well, there were eight of them and she'd already killed three by the time I joined the fight. Together, we made short work of them and the last one limped away licking its wounds."

Is that when she asked you to join? "Actually, that's when she politely asked me to hand over my coin purse. Can you imagine? We scuffled for a while, broke each other's weapons, and finally fell to the ground exhausted."

A stalemate? "Indeed. After a few minutes, she looked me dead in the eye and asked me if I wanted to join the Guild. Just like that, no apologies."

That was big of you to accept. "Something told me I wouldn't regret it. I had heard the Guild was back on its feet again and most of Skyrim under its belt. I'll tell you, I wouldn't want to cross blades with Vex again, but I certainly wouldn't mind a bit of a scuffle..."
