Gloomreach (Skyrim)

Gloomreach is a large labrynthine cave system located in the mountains of The Reach near the Karth River and is divided into two sections; Gloomreach Cavern and Gloomreach Hive. Gloomreach is unlike any other cave system, as the explorer discovers shortly after entering. The cave is lit by an eery greenish blue lighting and glowing blue tendrils protrude from the walls and reach down from the ceiling. The roof of the caverns are covered in stragely glowing bluish substance.

Gloomreach is home to a group of the sightless Falmer and their domesticated insectoid Chaurus. Gloomreach offers plenty of danger and rewards for the intrepid adventurer.

Gloomreach Cavern

Gloomreach Cavern appears to be an abandoned Corundum mine as evidenced by the mining equipment and the presence of a Smelter along with several Corunum Ore Veins which can be found here as well. And if you happened to leave your pickaxe at home, fear not for one is nearby. Withershins is a book to increase the Restoration skill and can be found on a barrel where you encounter the first Falmer.

Gloomreach Hive

After traversing through the upper portion, Gloomreach Hive is reached. Following the tunnel leads to a larger cavern with a ramp leading down and ending in a fresh water pool occupied by a skeleton and some salmon. The hive contains more Falmer to be mercilessly destroyed, as well as a couple chests to be looted.

Alchemy

The cave system is of particular interest to the aspiring alchemist intent on gathering rare materials to improve their alchemy. Of particular interest is the large number of hard to acquire Chaurus Eggs which can be harvested from the chaurus pods found throughout the cave. Equally hard to acquire, Falmer Ears can be looted from slain Falmer. There is also a large number and variety of mushrooms which can be found here.

Notes

• Falmer shields are not worth looting as they have a negative weight to gold ratio.
• Bug/ Glitch - One of the Corundum ore veins appears to be un-mineable.
• Bug/ Glitch - In Gloomreach Hive your follower may not follow you to the lowest level, especially if you fall down one of the holes, but also the seem to have a problem navigating down the stone ramps.
