It is a miscellaneous quest received from Adrianne Avenicci in Whiterun. She asks the player if he/she can deliver a sword that she forged to her father.

Get the sword
Adrianne Avenicci has made a good sword and wants to give it to Jarl Balgruuf the Greater to show her skills. However, she can't seem to find an opportunity to deliver it. She wants the sword sent to her father, Proventus Avenicci, who works in Dragonsreach in Whiterun as a steward. Proventus Avenicci will give the sword to the Jarl at proper time.
Deliver the sword to Proventus
Go to Dragonsreach and meet Proventus Avenicci there, tell him what his daughter wants, and give him the sword. You will be rewarded 20 coins.

Bugs
[360]Sometimes, the greatsword will not go out of your inventory. Completing the quest or starting the Diplomatic Immunity quest (not smuggling it in) will not remove it from the inventory. No known fix yet.
Trivia
- If you have captured Whiterun while on the Stormcloaks during their Civil War questline, then you can find Jarl Balgruuf the Greater and Proventus Avenicci in the basement of the Blue Palace in Solitude.
