Main article: Tanning
For other uses, see Leather.

Leather is a crafting material found in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Leather is used mainly in the creation of armor and Leather Strips. Leather can also be used to improve leather-based armor at a workbench, such as Hide Armor, Leather Armor, and Shrouded Armor. Note, however, that Enchanted Armor requires the Arcane Blacksmith perk to upgrade.

Acquisition[edit | edit source]

Leather can be obtained by tanning animal pelts and hides at a tanning rack, or it can be bought from merchants or hunters throughout Skyrim. Rabbits and mammoths do not drop pelts, but giants tend to carry various pelts and hides, because that is what they wear.

Harbingers of the Companions can garner multiple pelts quickly by repeatedly replaying the radiant quest "Animal Extermination," given by Aela the Huntress. Not all of these quests are against creatures that drop pelts, however.

Stolen pelts[edit | edit source]

Pelts stolen from NPCs can be crafted into legitimate leather, and stolen leather can be turned into legitimate leather strips or armor. This is not specific to leather, however; any stolen material that is crafted loses its stolen status.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • All crafting of leather creates additional weight in one's inventory, with an exception in regards to leather strips. To minimize carry weight, tan pelts either when leather is needed or when it can be stockpiled.
  • Sabre Cat Pelts and Fox Pelts are tied for the most efficient weight to leather ratio. Each unit of weight in pelts yields two leather.
  • Cow Hide is the most cost effective pelt when purchasing from merchants, followed closely by deer, fox, and horse. Any pelt valued at more than 10Gold-per-leather will likely be more expensive than simply buying leather directly from a blacksmith.
  • Although Fox Pelts are smaller than Goat Hides, only one Fox Pelt is required to craft a single piece of leather, while two Goat Pelts are required to craft the same amount.
