Walkthrough[]
In Northeastern Wrothgar you will find a deadric portal to the Maelstrom Arena. Make your way through the area until you find the master of this plane, Fa-Nuit-Hen. They will tell you that they made this plane to train strong warriors, and that his Barons Who Move Like This have prepared a gauntlet of challenges for you to face
Proceed through the door ahead and then through the portal to the first battlefield, the Vale of the Surreal. In this Shivering Isles-inspired battlefield, you will face several rounds of lesser daedra before you face the final boss, Maxus the Many. Maxus likes to create copies of himself, so make sure to cull them from time to time so you do not get overwhelmed.
After Maxus is dead, head through the next portal. This will lead you to Seht's Balcony, an arena inspired by a Dwemer ruin. In this arena, you will have to face several waves of Dwemer constructs while avoiding the spinning traps on the floor. The final bosses here are three Centurion Champions; each of them will periodically go inactive, during which time you cannot hurt them. Once all three are dead, head through the portal to the third arena, the Drome of Toxic Shock.
In this swamp-based battlefield, you will be facing enemies commonly found in the marshes, like Lamias, Wamasus and Argonians. The enemies here are tougher than in the previous two arenas, so take care. After several waves, you will face off against the Lamia Queen. Kill her, then head on through the next portal to Seht's Flywheel.
This arena is based on Sotha Sil's Clockwork City. The fights here are fairly straightforward. You will be facing scavengers and dwemer constructs. The final boss here is the Control Guardian, a giant construct that will slowly circle around the arena, shooting lightning at you. Occasionally, it will stop moving to set the ground below it on fire. Make sure to keep your distance when it does this. After you have killed the construct, head through the portal to the next arena, the Rink of Frozen Blood.
This arena will consist of a partially-frozen lake. The freezing waters here will damage your health, so try to stay on the ice as much as possible. You will be facing Ogres, Trolls, Frost Atronachs and Giants here. The trolls will try to break the ice platforms, so make sure to eliminate them as quickly as possible, before they get the chance to do that. The final boss is a giant named Matriarch Runa; like the trolls, she also likes to break the ice. When she breaks the sheet of ice you are fighting on, make sure to quickly make your way over to another sheet. After Runa lies dead, proceed onward to the next arena, the Spiral Shadows.
This arena draws inspiration from Mephala's Spiral Skein. You will be facing spiders, scorpions, hoarvors and harvesters here. every once in a while, a swarm of spiders will attack; stand near one of the glowing pillars throughout the arena to repel them. After several waves of these foes, the final boss of this section will appear, a Spider Daedra called the Champion of Atrocity. Slay this beast, then head on to the Vault of Umbrage.
This next battlefield will be in a swamp. You will mainly be facing argonians and trolls here. During the battle, you will notice strange plants spring up from the ground; these will explode and release a poisonous gas. If you get poisoned by this gas, head over to one of the green pools on the sides of the arena to cleanse yourself; if you do not do this quickly, the poison will kill you. If the screen goes green, that means an Argonian Venomcaller has spawned; these enemies will cause the plants to grow and explode more quickly, so take them out quickly. After several waves of enemies, the boss will spawn, an Argonian Behemoth. You will also notice that some lesser enemies will spawn called Argonian Minders. Do not kill these. The boss has a very powerful attack that will affect the whole battlefield and is guaranteed to kill you if you get hit, but the Minders will create a ward around themselves to protect themselves. If you are inside the ward, you survive, if not, you die. If there are no minders left alive, you have no chance of survival. Once the big argonian is dead, proceed through the next portal to the Igneous Cistern.
This battlefield is surrounded by lava, and fireballs will occasionally hit the battlefield as you fend off the Dremora and Flame Atronachs. The miniboss at the end of each wave can only be hit once you have destroyed the Warding Stone on the battlefield; fight off several waves like this until the boss, Valkyn Tephra, appears. She will have three warding stones you must destroy before you can hurt her, and she will occasionally repair them throughout the battle. Slay her, then head onward to the final arena, the Theater of Despair.
This battlefield is inspired by Mehrunes Dagon's Deadlands. Your enemies here will be regular daedra, with an Ash Titan finishing off the 5th wave. There will be ghosts flying around the arena; take care to avoid these. Every once in a while, a summoning ritual will begin at the center of the arena, make sure to interrupt it. After the regular enemies are all dead, the boss Voriak Solkyn will arrive. After you deal some damage to him, he will teleport into a cloud above the center of the arena; to damage him, you must use portals to get to the top floor and destroy the crystals there. Take care to avoid the enemy attacks though; the boss likes to knock you off into the lava below. Once the crystals are destroyed, the boss will return to the ground floor and you can kill him regularly.
Once the boss is dead, head through the portal back to the entrance and speak with Fa-Nuit-Hen to finish the quest.
