"There may be a matter in which your... skills... could be useful. The various points of focus for magic energies around the College have become polluted, and need cleansing."
Drevis Neloren[src]

Out of Balance is a quest available in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in which the Dragonborn is tasked by Drevis Neloren with tuning various focal points for magical energy around the College of Winterhold that have become polluted over time.

Background[]

Drevis Neloren has asked for my help in purifying the focus points for magical energy around the College. I've been given special Tuning gloves that I'll need to wear in order to cleanse the focal points. Drevis has warned that there may be side-effects to performing this task.

Objectives[]

  1. Cleanse the focal points for magical energies around the College
  2. Return to Drevis Neloren

Walkthrough[]

Ask Drevis Neloren about College business, and he tells the Dragonborn that the various points of focus for magic energies around the College have become polluted. Agree to help with their cleansing, and he hands off the Mystic Tuning Gloves which allow the Dragonborn to delve into these focal points. These gloves will be removed once the quest is finished.

The Mystic Focal Points are the pillars of light with a strange blue glow that were visible before taking the quest. There is one in the courtyard’s center in front of the mage statue, one in the middle of the Hall of Attainment, and one in the middle of the Hall of Countenance. Just approach the beam of light wearing the gloves, and cleanse them.

After each one is purified, the Dragonborn will receive a random empty Soul Gem, a magic boosting buff, or a minor harmful discharge. Return to Drevis Neloren to complete the quest and have the gloves removed.

This section contains bugs related to Out of Balance. Before adding a bug to this list, consider the following:

  1. Please reload an old save to confirm if the bug is still happening.
  2. If the bug is still occurring, please post the bug report with the appropriate system template  360  /  XB1  ,  PS3  /  PS4  ,  PC  /  MAC  ,  NX  /  PS5  ,  XS  , depending on which platform(s) the bug has been encountered on.
  3. Be descriptive when listing the bug and fixes, but avoid having conversations in the description and/or using first-person anecdotes: such discussions belong on the appropriate forum board.
  • When cleaning the focal points, a bugged two-hour buff may be placed on the Dragonborn that increases magicka regeneration immensely. It is possible to get multiples of this buff during the quest. In the active effects category, it appears as "Fortify Magicka." Selecting it reveals it as "+100 Fortify Magicka 2 hours." It regenerates magicka almost instantly and makes it possible to cast some spells indefinitely. This also makes it very easy to level up one's magic e.g. Telekinesis can be used on an object and held until one's Alteration skill is level 100, or constantly cast Muffle, to level up Illusion quickly, as the magicka regenerates faster than it depletes.
  • In this case, the buff(s) may be removed by opening the character editor with the "showracemenu" console command (on PC) and closing it again. This will also remove other temporary buffs, such as blessings.
  • If a save is made before activating the focal points, and then the point is activated, it is possible to reload the save and have that count as one of the focal points activated. By repeatedly doing this, one can complete the quest by activating only one point.
