Salty Sea-Dogs is a quest available in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in which the Dragonborn must to recover Fine-Cut Void Salts for Captain Wayfinder in Dawnstar.

Objectives[]

  1. Find the Fine-Cut Void Salts for Wayfinder
  2. Bring the Fine-Cut Void Salts to Wayfinder

Walkthrough[]

"They got drunk and ended up losing the merchandise in some cave. If you're not afraid of little exploring, I'll pay good gold to get those salts."
Captain Wayfinder[src]

The quest is started by speaking with Captain Wayfinder. He will ask that a special type of void salts, Fine-Cut Void Salts, be retrieved. As this is a radiant quest, locations will vary. See Fine-Cut Void Salts for details.

If the Dragonborn finds the Fine-Cut Void Salts before speaking with Captain Wayfinder, then the quest will be started immediately. See the Bugs section for information on how to avoid problems if this happens.

Once they are retrieved, speaking to Captain Wayfinder completes the quest. He will give the Dragonborn a leveled sum of Gold as a reward.

Bugs[]

This section contains bugs related to Salty Sea-Dogs. Before adding a bug to this list, consider the following:

  1. Please reload an old save to confirm if the bug is still happening.
  2. If the bug is still occurring, please post the bug report with the appropriate system template  360  /  XB1  ,  PS3  /  PS4  ,  PC  /  MAC  ,  NX  /  PS5  ,  XS  , depending on which platform(s) the bug has been encountered on.
  3. Be descriptive when listing the bug and fixes, but avoid having conversations in the description and/or using first-person anecdotes: such discussions belong on the appropriate forum board.

  •  PC   PS3   If this item is found before the quest has been started, the journal updates to state that the item should be given to Captain Wayfinder. When he is met, the dialogue options make it possible to start the quest again before completing the quest. The item is then respawned and a duplicate may be obtained. There is no known way to complete the quest in this case with two of the items in the inventory. When the item is obtained the second time, the quest marker does not update and there are no dialog options to complete the quest.
    • To fix the quest bug, if the Dragonborn has obtained the Fine-Cut Void Salts before receiving the quest from Captain Wayfinder, then while talking to him, the option should be chosen to immediately give him the fine-cut void salts, rather than trying to learn his story about the void salts (which triggers the quest). This way the quest can be completed without learning his history about the void salts which his crew misplaced.
    •  PC   360   This bug does not occur (Sometime on PC). If the Dragonborn talks to Captain Wayfinder and initiates the dialogue that would normally begin the quest, the Fine-Cut Void Salts disappear from the inventory and reappear in a radiant quest location.
  •  PC   360   PS3   Occasionally handing the Fine-Cut Void Salts to the captain and completing the quest will not remove them from inventory. They will no longer be a quest item and can be stored or used for crafting. They do not stack with regular void salts, but have the same properties, and they can be used an infinite number of times for alchemy without ever being used up.
