"A few drinks, a few laughs, and a contest. What could be better?"
―Sam Guevenne[src]

Sam Guevenne is a Breton mage who appears in the tavern of the town closest to the Dragonborn upon reaching level 14, where he challenges them to a drinking competition.

Equipment and combat[]

Typically adorned in Black Robes, Sam rarely wears a hood when encountered. He summons a Dremora Lord when attacked.

Interactions[]

A Night to Remember[]

Upon locating him, he offers a drinking contest and a staff as a reward. By taking three drinks of his special ale, the Dragonborn blacks out, awakening again at the Temple of Dibella in Markarth. After cleaning up the mess made the night before and apologizing for causing a scene, the Dragonborn asks the priestess Senna for clues about Sam's location. Her hints lead to Rorikstead. Following the clues eventually leads the Dragonborn to Morvunskar and a portal leading to Misty Grove. Upon entering the portal, Sam reveals himself as the Daedric Lord Sanguine. And, as promised, Sanguine offers the Sanguine Rose, a Daedric staff that allows a Dremora Lord to be summoned.

Dialogue[]

A Night to Remember

Upon first meeting Sam:

"You look like someone who can hold their liquor. How about a friendly contest to win a staff?"

A drinking contest? You don't stand a chance! "Ha! We'll see about that. This is a special brew, very strong stuff. Let's get started. Your turn."
Here we go. "One down, my friend. One down. And another one for me. And how about you?"
A second drink. Easy enough. "So says you. I think I've hit my limit on these things. Tell you what, one more and you win the contest."
One more. No problemsh. "Wow. You've really done it. The staff is yours."
Thrash grape!. "You know, you're a funny person to drink with. I know this great little place where the wine flows like water. We should head there. Hey, you don't look so good..."

In Morvunskar:

"You're here! I was beginning to think you might not make it."

It was quite a trip. Where are we? "I thought you might not remember your first trip here. You had a big night. I think you've definitely earned the staff."
I have all the things needed to repair it. "Oh, the Hagraven feather and so on. You can throw all those out. You see... I really just needed something to encourage you to go out into the world and spread merriment. And you did just that! I haven't been so entertained in at least a hundred years."
So all of this was just a prank? "Just a prank? Just a prank? The Daedric Lord of Debauchery does not deal in mere "pranks". This may have begun as a minor amusement, but it wasn't long before I realized you'd make a more interesting bearer of my not-quite-holy staff."
Who are you? "I am Sanguine, Daedric Prince of Debauchery! I know, I know, how could I lie to you? Well, how could I trust you until we've shared a few drinks? But it wasn't long before I realized you'd make a more interesting bearer of my not-quite-holy staff than this waste of flesh."
Why did you choose me? "Let's be honest, here. I don't always think my decisions through. But you... you're going places. Maybe a little influence from your old uncle Sanguine could help adjust your course a bit..."
Thanks, I guess. "My pleasure. But I think it's time for you to go. No fun keeping you locked up in here with the staff."

Quotes[]

  • "If you're looking for a challenge, you've come to the right place."
  • "Maybe you just aren't up to the challenge."

Trivia[]

  • If the Dragonborn enters the portal as a werewolf, Sam will attack them using lightning-based spells rather than summoning a Dremora.
  • He will be in the tavern nearest to where the player was when becoming level 14.
  • When starting "The Night to Remember" quest, the objective will say "Talk to Sam Guenvere" instead of Guevenne.

  2. If the bug is still occurring, please post the bug report with the appropriate system template  360  /  XB1  ,  PS3  /  PS4  ,  PC  /  MAC  ,  NX  , depending on which platform(s) the bug has been encountered on.

  •  PS3   The Dragonborn may get stuck in the talking menu if one of the dialogue options has been skipped. This may happen everytime when the Dragonborn enters the inn they are in.
  •  PC   360   PS3   The Dragonborn might not black out after Sam says, "You don't look so good." It is suspected that this is caused by the death of Ysolda, a Nord in Whiterun. However, this also happens even if Ysolda is alive; Ysolda is flagged as essential before the completion of the quest.
