"You enter the gates of Soulrest, leaving the sounds of the ocean and surf behind. Inside it seems as if a hush as fallen over the city, as if all inside are holding their breath in anticipation."
―Description in Arena[src]

Soulrest is one of the eight major cities in the province of Black Marsh, situated on the southwest coast, on the Topal Bay. Soulrest is a quiet port-town that is also a major trading post amidst the southern sea, and even the East Empire Trading Company.

History

First Era

The Great Burn & Regulus Sardecus

In 1E 2811, the Second Empire of Cyrodiil waged war with the Black Marshes, long before it was the province that is known to this day. It had begun with the borderlands, as it soon pushed into the regions of the inner marsh. Regulus Sardecus was the second commander to take the helm of the Reman Invasion Front against Black Marsh, ever since Augurius Bucco had lost at the massacre at Xi-tsei. However, Sardecus' campaign ended in ruin, when Elissia Mallicius had burned a peat bog outside of Stormhold, which had inadvertently burn the entirety of Black Marsh, as far as Soulrest and Gideon. The "Great Burn" as it was called, had killed dozens of Legionnaires by inflicting them with Swamp Lung. This ended the Second Campaign, and ultimately led to the death of Regulus Sardecus.[2][3]

Third Era

Soulrest during the Imperial Simulacrum

During the Imperial Simulacrum from 3E 389 to 3E 399, Emperor Uriel Septim VII was imprisoned along with Talin Warhaft in the Deadlands by Jagar Tharn. Tharn planned for months to capture the throne, and he was able to achieve so in ten years. Tharn had a powerful weapon called the Staff of Chaos, and he split it into nine pieces and scattered them across Tamriel, the staff was the only thing keeping Uriel Septim and Warhaft in Oblivion. A warrior escaped his clutches and traveled all corners of Tamriel to retrieve the missing pieces. The hero was known as the Eternal Champion, and he assembled the staff and defeated Jagar Tharn at the Imperial Palace. The Eternal Champion had at one point visited the city of Soulrest in their quest to recover the pieces. The city of Soulrest was under the rule of Queen Heciana.[4]
