Sound is a magical effect that produces a disorienting noise in the victim's mind, reducing their ability to concentrate and lowering their chance of successfully casting spells. Although the in-game description states that the effect's magnitude is the reduction in the victim's chance to successfully cast spells, the actual result varies by approximately ± 25% of the effect's magnitude. (For details see Magnitude, below.) Sound is a member of the Illusion school of magic, governed by Personality. Its base Magicka cost is 3 points.
Sound is one of several effects that can be used to cripple spellcasters. Although one point of a Damage Skill effect is more potent than one point of Sound to lower a caster's chance of successfully casting spells, it only applies to only one school of magic and costs four times more Magicka. Damaging Luck or Willpower attributes is far less effective for this purpose. Other effects that apply to all schools of magic and have both advantages and disadvantages compared to Sound.

Unlike other magical effects that impact the chance of successfully performing an action such as Sanctuary, Sound is affected by the target's Fatigue. It is only when a victim is 50% fatigued that Sound's magnitude represents the actual reduction in the victim's percent chance of successfully casting a spell. A victim who is well rested experiences a greater loss (up to 1.25 × Sound magnitude), while a victim who is nearing exhaustion experiences a lesser reduction (as low as 0.75 × Sound magnitude). If the victim's Fatigue levels are known, the actual result can be calculated using the following equation:

There is only one item in Morrowind and expansion packs that is enchanted with a Sound effect. The Madstone of the Ahemmusa is an amulet consisting of a 50-point effect for 20 seconds on touch. It is received from Sinnammu Mirpal upon being named the Ahemmusa Nerevarine during the main quest.
