He makes a good meat shield and does a funny dance if you give him booze, dies if you shoot him whilst he is down. I used him and cicero(not as much on account of him being bonkers) as my main follower up until the end, his heavy armor (even all with stealth perks) still caused him to pull monsters from miles away. Had a weird glitch when agreeing to brawl with him where suddenly there was him and a markarth guard looking all shadowy attacking me with their weapons. When I killed them I got the 1000 gold bounty. Had to reload my game from a save.
