Thane of Eastmarch is a quest available in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Similar to other Hold Thane quests, the Dragonborn can gain the title of Thane of Eastmarch. This quest only becomes available if the player either helps the Imperial Legion win the Civil War, or helps the Stormcloaks liberate Falkreath.

Imperial Legion questline[]
After completing the quest "Reunification of Skyrim," Brunwulf Free-Winter will become Jarl of Windhelm, whereupon he will give the Dragonborn the option to become a Thane of Eastmarch.
Stormcloak questline[]
After progressing through the questline "Liberation of Skyrim", the Dragonborn will need to complete "Rescue from Fort Neugrad", liberating Falkreath from the Empire. Upon doing so, Ulfric Stormcloak will give the Dragonborn the option to become a Thane of Eastmarch.
Regardless of the questline followed, there are two requirements to becoming Thane of Eastmarch:
- Purchase Hjerim from Jorleif (Stormcloaks) or Captain Lonely-Gale (Empire) for 12,000
. - Assist five citizens of Eastmarch.

While completing "Blood on the Ice" is not a prerequisite of becoming a Thane of Eastmarch, the quest will automatically start upon the purchase of Hjerim. Also, if on the Legion's side in the Civil War, Brunwulf's bandit quest must be done to become a Thane anyway.
Regardless of who controls Windhelm, the Dragonborn must speak to Ulfric/Brunwulf, and the Jarl will offer the title of Thane contingent on them helping five people of Windhelm as mentioned above and purchasing Hjerim from their respective steward. After these two objectives have been completed, Ulfric/Brunwulf will grant the Dragonborn the title of Thane, give them a random leveled weapon of Eastmarch, and appoint a housecarl, named Calder, to serve them.

Bugs[]

This section contains bugs related to Thane of Eastmarch. Before adding a bug to this list, consider the following:

- There is a bug where Brunwulf is never updated to his new position as Jarl of Windhelm.
- PC (Fix) Using the console command
addfac 00050920 1, gives him the new dialogue and outfit, but he will still not reside in the Palace of Kings. However, he should have the Thane dialogue option available, should the player have already helped 5 citizens.
- PC (Fix) Using the console command
- PS4 If Brunwulf is Jarl, turning in radiant bandit bounty quests may not add to the quest stage for becoming Thane.
