Walkthrough
The target is a Nord named Havilstein Hoar-Blood and he is five levels above you. Beware of his magical battle axe and his pet wolf. They can be found on Gnoll Mountain, outside of Bruma in the Jerall Mountains. The way to where he is can be really challenging. If you don't have a horse, you will have to find the path to reach him because he is on the top of the hill. If you have the Frostcrag Spire aka Wizard's Tower you can fast travel to that location and you'll find him just down the path from the front steps. Your target is camping outside with his wolf, on the path, and they will strike you once they see you. For an assassin that can't take him down in head-to-head combat, run down the mountain and watch him clumsily fall to his own death while trying to swing at you. Loot his axe and you can sell it for a lot of gold.
Alternatively, you can also have him chase you back to the gates of Bruma where he will be confronted by the Bruma guard and killed while you stand by and watch.
The dead drop location is very, very tricky. Presuming you already have at least Buoyancy spell under your belt or at least a scroll or an amulet that enable you to breathe under water. You get the Buoyancy spell when you do the mage recommendation quest to retrieve Ring of Burden on Cheydinhal Recommendation. The chest is behind a lock gate submerged under water. Because you can't cast a spell under water, you need to find a Rusty Key in a chest.(or if you have the Skeleton key just go start to where the map marker shows you to go) Go around the dungeon and you will find a lot of Marauders attacking you. Once you arrive at a very large room with some sleeping bags and chest, you will be attacked with at least 3 Marauders. Kill them all and one of them has the Rusty Key to open this gate. Once you open the gate, you can open the chest to get your reward and the next target for the quest. The key can also be found in one of the Mage's Guild halls.
Alternatively you can also take a weak potion of water breathing. A master of sneak is also able to move right past the Marauders without being detected.
The next Dead Drop will be at Nornal. After entering, there will be a locked gate that can be picked open with a lockpick. There is also a way to jump through the metal bars. Furthermore if you get a rusty key from another quest or as loot it may open the chest.
Journal entries
Upon receiving the quest:
- I have picked up my next contract from the dead drop in the hollowed-out tree stump. I have been ordered to go to the campsite on Gnoll Mountain and kill Havilstein Hoar-Blood, a savage Nord Barbarian skilled in the use of the axe.
After killing the barbarian:
- Havilstein Hoar-Blood is dead. I must now pick up my reward and next contract at the dead drop located in an old chest that is sunk into the pool at the Ayleid ruin of Nornal.
