Blood Reaper (talk) 13:53, June 4, 2012 (UTC)

The main reason I would like to join the news team is to inform everyone about news on TES. As you know I've created many news blogs for the wiki. Most of the day ( every hour ) I look at Bethesda's tweet wall on any new information for Skyrim so I won't be late on creating news blog if I do join the team. English is my first language and strongest so I won't have any trouble when it comes to creating news blogs. I must admit though, that I sometimes don't double check my blogs, but I eventually look over it and fix grammer and errors. My main strong point is that I had a long experience with creating these types of blogs. To be exact, I've created around 45 news blogs and at least 70 blogs in total. The only side issue is how to correctly format news blogs ( might have to discuss it with me).

Here's an example of my news work - Baby named Dovahkiin

Here's two examples of what I can do without copying and pasting - Mysteries of TES I | Mysteries of TES II

Reply to Jimeee

I do see your points here Jimee and that's why I'm planning to actual check over my blogs and change my style a lot more. I act casual because It didn't seem neccessary at the time. I asked a couple of other admins back then about my blog and they said you can use your own style of blogs so I don't really think of it. I CAN write professional but I choose not to. If I do join the team I'll change the way I do things. Simple as that.

P.S. My mediocrity on TES Lore isn't exactly my strong point.

Oppose

Voting-oppose.svg Oppose – Just a few points why I oppose. This is nothing personal and don't feel bad if it sounds a little harsh.

  • By your own admission you say overlook grammar and spelling errors - this is a basic requirement of news reporting that is absolutely required if we want to be seen by new readers as a professional news source.
  • Your style of writing is far too casual to be considered "official" news. Examples in your past blogs include things like: "CLICK ME BRO! IM THE BETA SIGN UP" and "Sooo ENJOY!". This style of writing is not professional and is not what we want on the front page.
  • The articles you posted also show that your style of writing is too casual and relaxed in tone, but they also don't link to any other articles and they're not referenced in any way whatsoever.
  • In addition, you have not done any basic fact checking for the Mysteries of TES I article as you posted two images about the Akavir - both of which are non-canon, but you've mentioned later "There's only one actual picture portraying one of the Akaviri which are the Tsaesci (snake men)." Basic fact checking and providing references is very important for our official news and examples like this are not acceptable.
  • Although you are quick in posting new updates that occur and you've written many news blogs, this alone doesn't qualify anyone to be responsible for our news output. In the coming months our news section will be very busy and we need people who at the very least pass our four main criteria. We need to provide potential new readers with a professional, accurate news feed that they can rely on and come back to. Anything less and we will simply lose readers and the wiki suffers.

Jimeee (talk) 15:15, June 4, 2012 (UTC)

Voting-oppose.svg Oppose – Your inability to follow the instructions given to you when applying here, I think demonstrates why I oppose this nomination. It's clearly stated that you should leave a link to your userpage in the heading, something you have failed to do. Your lack of knowledge of wiki formatting, point 3 of our criteria, is also worrying. If you had any real knowledge of it, you would be aware of the fact that you should reply to a comment made by someone else by writing underneath it, and indenting by using a : at the start of the line. The fact that you seemingly don't know this, after having 'edited' here for around 11 months, and being a member of Wikia's community council, worries me greatly. The unnecessary use of bolding in a title does not exactly fill me with confidence, either.
Something I myself want to see in news team members would be the willingness to follow instructions handed to you by a superior member of staff. By your own admission, you don't respect authority. There was a time when you would often show me a poor attitude towards your superiors when you were a member of our IRC channel staff. This is another point I'd like to make: The pivotal word in my last sentence was were. Given the fact that you could not handle op, or even halfop status on our IRC channel well causes me to wonder whether it is a good idea to grant you the authority of being this wiki's "face to the public," and allowing your 'news' posts to be published on the main page.
Your previous tendency to simply copy and paste entire news articles from sources, claim them as your own and simply leave a backlink with no explanation at the bottom of your blog is not something I ever admired, and still do not. I do not see any examples of your use of proper reference tags in many of your 'news' blogs, either. I recall one occasion on which I asked you to stop doing this, and yes, you did make some effort, but your reaction to my request of you was not exactly polite; Which caused me to become aggravated. I do not particularly want to be annoyed by the responses of staff members to polite requests of them, and I doubt Timeoin or any of the rest of the community does either.
I know from personal experience, and from reading your blogs that your grammar is quite often not up to scratch. You claim that you save your excellence in the English language for formal occasions, but I never see this demonstrated in your news blogs - Blogs which hold, in fact, the purpose of representing the wiki and its community to the whole outside world. If this is not a formal situation then, I ask you, what is?
This leaves us with one thing you do well; Actively seek information. Good job, you have the time to monitor the Bethesda twitter feed often. You'll need to do quite a lot more than just that, though, to get yourself on the News Team, and become the wiki's "face to the public."
I'd like to mention that Bethesda's official twitter feed is also not the only place you could be searching for information.
Thank you, and I hope you read and understand everything I have said here. Elchzard (talk) 01:36, June 5, 2012 (UTC)

Voting-support.svg Support – The blogs are well written, but I see some room for improvement. Nothing big though: Image placement should be inline. Some in Coming Attractions for instance, the image gets ignored by the blog parser on the main page, which results in three linebreaks. Those linebreaks should be avoided in the future. ~ Flightmare (talk) 10:27, August 28, 2012 (UTC)

Neutral

Voting-neutral.svg Neutral – Not of the mind to write a full critique now, but I will make some general style recommendations. First, ensure the tone of your writing circulates around the subject of the text, not the reader of it. Just like with articles, the reader's identity should only be implied. Try to avoid using "you" and "I". Instead, talk about the subjects in an indirect way. I cannot stress enough how imperative tone is to professionalism.

Another issue appears to be image placement. As Flightmare pinpointed, images must be in-line. Quotes longer than two sentences should be placed the way images are. The quote template looks messy on blogs and should be reserves for articles. Use the <blockquote></blockquote> tags instead. Additionally, you must add thumbnail parameters to your images. No hidden, alt text, as seems to be your current style. The caption must be in the thumbnail for optimal readability; also, it's house style. As far as writing style and mood goes, I still feel that the voice is cliche and gimmicky rather than journalistic. Practice makes perfect. I would like to see an Elder Scrolls blog without speculations or original research before I make a yay or nay. Hope you find these comments illuminating.

Another minor, less imperative tidbit: contractions, as a house rule, are to be avoided. Cannot versus can't. Do not versus don't. As with numbers, contractions should be written out in formal letter and essay format, excluding o'clock, as is commonly dictated by writing etiquette. --—Deyvid Petteys (bother \ stalk) 10:35, August 28, 2012 (UTC)

Comments

Voting-comment.svg Comment – Wanted to respond to Flightmare's and Deyvid's criticisms:

1. How would I make it inline? I will need to know how to to avoid those nasty linebreaks.

2. I always keep "you" and "I" out of content articles, so that should not be much of a problem. Is it bad form to use them at all in news posts? I believe I have seen some news rticles with the word "you" in it.

3. So, should I simply use the {{Quote| template in the future, but surrounded by blockquote tags?

4. I will stick to thumbnails for any future blog posts. I do not really like them, so I typically just set the images to |250|right]] for aesthetic quality on my blogs and other wikis. Understandably however, I can see how making them clearly visible is important for news posts.

5. Not entirely sure what you mean by gimmicky here, though. If you want me to maintain a more nuetral tone for news posts (I don't know how many opinion-based news articles you want) I can keep that seperate from the entertainment-style of my usual blog posts.

6. I'll I will try to avoid them in the future for any blog posts.

--The Milkman | I always deliver. 11:31, August 28, 2012 (UTC)

  1. Just use the align right that is used in articles.
  2. N/A
  3. You can use the format I did in my last news blog. Simply <blockquote class="char">"Your quote"</blockquote>
Jimeee (talk) 12:21, August 28, 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! Hopefully I'll be able to figure it out. --The Milkman | I always deliver. 23:57, August 28, 2012 (UTC)
By inline I mean inline in the source, not in the end result. Those are two different things. Remove the line breaks above and below the image. Thumbnails will fix a lot of the graphical issues when it comes to readability. These elements are styled by default and will float instead of appearing inline (end result). ~ Flightmare (talk) 09:30, August 29, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I think I see what you mean. I usually do that to keep the source code more organised. I'll keep it together.
Also, Ygrain I probably do, though I do thoroughly check for spelling errors in source mode. However, I think of a lot of perceived typos may actaully be me using British English (Organise as opposed to Organize) and archaic English (Actour instead of actor, titbit instead of tidbit).

I'm Vaughan, I'm very touchy about spelling mistakes! I spend most of my internet life on this wiki as not much else interests me. Several of my blog posts have got very popular, including my Second Great War post and my Marriage blog also.

I'd like to become a part of the news team because I have a large knowledge of Elder Scrolls Lore and can keep up to date with regular announcements. I'd be an asset to the team as I can write unbiased (or if needed, biased) blogs and posts on everything new about TES. I'm particularly excited about The Elder Scrolls Online, as it will provide the news team a lot of interesting new topics, including who becomes emperor, winning factions and most importantly the lead up to the release as we learn more information.

Voting-neutral.svg Neutral – I'm just going to give it to everyone straight and to the point, and I don't care if people get butthurt by it: I don't see the point whatosever in this. Jarjarkine does fine without needing a coloured name or a template on their userpage, especially as that is all it means: hell, the user does not even need to go through this, they could just slap the news team template on their page and ask a sysop to add them to the list and they're automatically a member. It gives no additional user rights whatsoever and there are no filters or anything that stops random users like me from categorising their blogs under the Community News category. So I have to be neutral regardless of whether I like the candidate or not, even though Jarjarkine's interviews are interesting. This nomination is a waste of people's time and does absolutely nothing to improve the wiki, there are better things all of us can be doing than voting on something so pointless. --Sajuuk talk | contribs | Channel 12:02, March 9, 2015 (UTC)

Voting-comment.svg Comment – From what you're saying it sounds like you think the News Team is useless or irrelevant. The News Team is here for recognition and authority, just because they don't have additional flags does not mean they are not needed. News Team members are voted into their position, "slapping a template on your user page" will not make you a News Team member, the staff will remove it unless you are already an active staff member (I can confirm this when I was testing things out and put an administrator template on my page; it was removed shortly afterwards). A person who writes a bunch of spam and categorizes it under "News" will have their blog decategorized from it, we address loopholes and exploits. The News Team has full authority to categorize their blog posts under News. The News Team may currently only have 1 member, but that does not mean we do not need them. A regular user wanting to become a News Team member must go through the process of an application approval, there are no exceptions. ☞ Rim < Chat with Me | Updates | Edits > 02:38, March 10, 2015 (UTC)
Voting-comment.svg Comment – You cannot possibly categorise slapping a News Team template with that of you placing the Admin template, they are completely different. There is no additional user group flag whatsoever for the News Team, but there is one for admins. Hence, you placing the admin template on your page is totally misleading. As I very much explained, there are no filters and no additional user group rights for being a news team member: thus, "voting" on it is a waste of time. Overall, being a news team member or not does not give people "extra" authority at all, it just gives people the ability to pretend they're staff members (with the coloured name and template). Jarjarkine does not need to be a news team member to continue posting interviews and can be recognised without this pointless vote and thus, I posted a neutral vote with a strong opinion, which I am perfectly entitled to post. --Sajuuk talk | contribs | Channel 08:54, March 10, 2015 (UTC)
Voting-comment.svg Comment – What you're saying is that the News Team shouldn't exist. Your argument is that anyone can become a member if they slap a template on their page. You can try this yourself, I will remove it. If for example you want to become a member of the news team, you have to go through a nomination. The News Team is not pointless. ☞ Rim < Chat with Me | Updates | Edits > 21:22, March 10, 2015 (UTC)

There's actually a big burden on the formatting of blogs as the system publishing them to the main page isn't the best at displaying them correctly. — Flightmare (talk) 11:25, February 2, 2017 (UTC)

I would like to nominate myself for new team. Although news team is more of a formal title than anything else, I have proven that I can create news articles worthy of being put up on the main page of the wiki. I already have a couple of articles created, as seen here, here, and here, all featured on the main page.

I've proven that I look for news related to the series, such as upcoming titles, DLCs, and other information, that (thankfully) I can use mostly-coherent English, that I can use proper formatting for the blogs, write original content, and source my content correctly, the five requirements of being on the news team. – The Crusader of Truth (talkchat) 00:58, November 26, 2017 (UTC)

Hello, this is Poisoned Apples. Writing is one of my strongest passions, and considering I already do this weekly on the /d, I would like to branch out and help out on the news team. I am able to gather information and write sourced original content, with some of my best examples here and here. I’m also familiar with editing, having added dialogue to Oblivion character stubs, done rewrites according to the style guide, and added references to certain lore articles as well as fixing spelling and grammar. I have enjoyed contributing both on articles and in the discussions and would love to help out in another way. Thanks! - Poisoned apples (talk) 04:11, October 6, 2018 (UTC)

Stygies VIII

Nomination for Stygies VIII. Successful.

Stygies VIIITalkContribsEdit count

Hello,

I would like to apply to the News Team for two reasons. One of them is the fact that the team is small and could get some help. The other is that I'm indeed passionate about communicating with communities and writing news or social media posts. I'm also competent to do this.

Now I will refer to the seven points from the list of expectations.

1. I follow all news related to The Elder Scrolls no matter whether I'm a news writer or not. I simply do it because I want to know. I even stay up at night every year to watch E3 live. I manage a few Polish groups on facebook, where I post news, including The Elder Scrolls Polska and The Elder Scrolls Online Polska, as well as international groups for TES: Legends and TES: Blades.

I used to write multiple news posts and guides for the Polish The Elder Scrolls Wiki when I used to be an administrator and then a bureaucrat there. I also managed the wiki's all social media during 2015-2018 increasing the number of editors and popularity of the wiki. I became a Bethesda.net volunteer moderator (I'm not an employee, only a medium between Polish language users and English staff and a barrier between mayhem and cultured discussion) in 2018 when Bethesda decided to add Polish language to the forums. Sometimes I get news or updates even before the press gets them because I have to get ready for increased traffic on the official forums. I do have NDA signed and I will never break it, but sometimes that can be helpful to look out for news when Bethesda publishes them.

But the main, primary reason why I follow all the news is because I just want to. It's my hobby after all.

2. I use English on a daily basis. At work, at wikis, during other activites. I spent five years in two schools with English curriculum (last classes of primary school and whole secondary school). We communicated in English all the time there. In result, I'm pretty much bilingual to this day.

I'm one of the leaders of Scribes of Tamriel, a team that creates the fan translation of ESO to Polish. It has been praised by Matt Firor. I translate and coordinate the project.

I also translate at work in an indie gamedev studio, but I'll share only one example because I don't want Fandom to think we would profit from promotion here: http://www.coffeenoirgame.com/2019/04/08/virtual-comic-pages/

I write articles in English and contribute to The Elder Scrolls Wiki and The Imperial Library (by the way, because you'll be checking, I go by the name Aunt Sotha at TIL and some other places now) in fluent English. You can also check the language corectness of my lore articles for Team Rankstar https://teamrankstar.com/author/stygiesviii/

3. I think you can check out my 1,5k edits. My edits for Blades may be incorrect because I wasn't sure how to build completely new articles for the game without any tips. However, you can see my whole progress because I started editing at this wiki in 2014 and that's how I started editing at all. I'm familiar with your guidelines. What's more, when I find some time, I attend moots and consensus threads.

4. That would be everything I mentioned in answer 1. I tend to write my own posts and articles, not copy them. I also write some articles for students' newspaper at my university.

5. I think that my experience as English The Elder Scrolls Wiki editor, Polish The Elder Scrolls Wiki editor and assistant librarian role at The Imperial Library are proof of my knowledge about sources (and where to find them). Librarians and assistant librarians at TIL are chosen for their knowledge and experience instead of applying.

6. I operate wiki-related social media accounts since 2015:

  • Previously mentioned Polish The Elder Scrolls Wiki in 2015-2018
  • Currently: Polish Cyberpunk Wiki, Polish Starfield Wiki (the latter is inactive for now but prepared for any news)
  • Other: Social media of Scribes of Tamriel and facebook groups. A lot of Polish TES groups, as well as TES: Legends and TES: Blades groups
  • In real life, I also manage social media at work. My job is mostly marketing games via social media

7. I'm familiar with slack due to using it as Community Councilor and at work.

Hi guys,

After discussing it with Atvelonis and some other staff members, I've decided to take their advice and apply to the news team as I believe that even with my limited amount of available time, I can still find ways to contribute through social media management. As some of you might know, I'm a licensed graphic designer/artist so that would be what I'd spend my available time doing: Making social media post designs in co-operation with Stygies, Poisoned Apples & Atvelonis. I've made some graphics for the wiki/our social media in the past, but I'm confident I've improved my design skills since then so I'm sure I'm able to improve our social media outlets with professional graphics and give us a real corporate identity. Dear TES wikians,

I am writing to apply for the News Team position. The Elder Scrolls has been an important part of my life, and this has lead me to regularly check the official news sources from Bethesda and Zenimax, as well as other sources such as the Weekly Updates of the wiki. I would like to do my bit by personally contributing to the diffusion of the information about TES related news.

I am familiar with the social media accounts the wiki operates. It has been brought to my attention that the news team is trying to expand their social media focus. I would be willing to regularly post trivia and polls, as well as other content in order to increase the impact of the wiki in said social media. These posts could have a similar structure to the Weekly Lore Series or Featured page of the Day threads I posted on the Discussions. I believe that one of my strong points is to transmit information in an humorous and entertaining manner.

I would also be interested in writing blog posts about the latest updates and DLCs for ESO and future TES games. You can read some of my blog posts for reference:

I already know most of the staff from my time as a moderator, so I think that I would make a great workmate. Moreover, I am familiar both with the policies of the wiki and the wikitext language.

To sum up, I believe that my knowledge about the news sources and the wiki guidelines makes me a qualified applicant for the news team.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello All,

I am here today to apply to the News Team. Recently, I have found my ever-growing love and interest for the Elder Scrolls to be diverging into finding out what the next big thing is. For example, TES VI is something I immensely look forward to (no matter how far away it is) and I jump on any new piece of news/info I get. Another example is Blades and what is going to be added in the next update, when that will be and how it will change the game. What I mean by this is: I have come to enjoy searching for new information regarding releases, updates, etc. and as the Elder Scrolls is such a big interest of mine I am always motivated to research new information. Which is why I feel that I, along with my enthusiasm, would be a good addition to the team.

I was told that, currently, the News Team wishes to expand their social media outreach. This is something I am more than happy to assist with as I will be able to help with different ways to promote the Wiki and showcase the vast collection of knowledge and information that is continuously added on a daily basis. On top of this, I am happy with also focusing on a certain aspect of the Wiki. Some of you may know, I am a very prominent editor of Blades articles and I stay on-top of each update and even try and incorporate these updates and explain them best I can in Wiki articles, see Loadouts or Loading Screens for an example.

While I'm an active editor, I am not as active in Discussions or Blogs. This is something I can change as I have a few ideas brainstormed regarding blog posts/guides and the like. Even though I don't make an appearance in these sections of the Wiki, which is something I can still change, I would like to provide News to readers as I am passionate about finding information and staying on top of updates and would like to help pass on this knowledge and enthusiasm to those who read the News. Even if it isn't News, writing Blogs regarding Blades is something I am strongly considering.

Continuity wise, I will be a dedicated member of the Team as I have proven on the Wiki that projects that I start or assist with I intend to go on until the end. A few examples of this will be my on-going quest to include all data and images for Weapons, Armour, Creatures and Enemies to name a few. But it isn't just Blades though, I am also trying to add missing data to all the missing data pages for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim as well as beginning to do the same for The Elder Scrolls Online and update all low quality images for Skyrim.

Following on from being an active editor, during my time editing at the Wiki I have been able to learn and understand Wikitext so will have no trouble being able to create and edit News articles where necessary. As well as this, I also have a good understanding of Wiki policies too,

Outside of the Wiki I also hold a reporter role on a website called CPAM which stands for (Club Penguin Army Media) which, while it may be perceived as a child's game, actually has a very active community where different "armies" battle it out to get themselves in the Top Ten. I have gained necessary reporting experience from this as well as Weekly Update posts on an RPAN subreddit I am a moderator on.

I have had the pleasure of being able to get to know a few staff members from my time at the Wiki so I feel I would be able to fit in as a good addition to the team and prove myself to be a good team player.

In conclusion, I feel with my TES knowledge, enthusiasm for researching new information, dedication to the community and TES as a whole I would be a great addition to the News Team.

Thank you for taking the time to read my application.

Talos Guide You,

Voting-support.svg Support – Two new people on the team wouldn't hurt, especially because we're trying to actively expand our outreach. ElderChicken's editorial contributions in the past indicate a pretty strong focus on Blades, which would be valuable as that's not a game that all of us are too familiar with, and obviously show some familiarity with wikitext. I'm personally less concerned with having already published blogs than I am with overall commitment to the wiki/attitude toward collaboration, which I think EC seems to embody well. —Atvelonis (talk) 17:10, May 31, 2020 (UTC)

Voting-support.svg Support – ElderChicken is a highly agreeable editor who has shown a great passion for The Elder Scrolls and contributing to the Wiki. Over the course of his editing, he has demonstrated both a keen knowledge of the series and Wiki as well as a willingness to learn and improve his editing skills, which he has done very well. His addition to the News Team and further work for the Wiki in that regard would be greatly appreciated to help the Wiki expand on social media. I look forward to his inclusion to the staff. Voting-support.svg SupportAt this rate, we will run out of blue nicknames. He has all the skills needed for this position, and the Wiki could certainly use more more media presence.—TinyClayMan (talk) 11:09, June 6, 2020 (UTC)
