== Excessive signatures ==
Can we please add something to this policy about excessively long signatures? I have seen some talkpages littered with really long signatures that contain lines upon lines of CSS and this makes them hard to edit. If possible, a rule should be introduced so that signatures should not break into more than 2 lines in source mode. :::Yes, I agree as there has been a few, including Emperor above me who has now changed his signature, that have been ridiculous. It hasn't been any problem before until last year, so it hasn't been thought of (I think). ::::Signatures are not supposed to be in the main template namespace, that is meant for public templates, such as infoboxes and warning templates. For personal content, they belong in your userspace (eg [[User:SuperSajuuk/Signature]] is where my signature is located). :::::::If it is as you say that few wiki's allow a signature using a template, how come I haven't seen this after looking at at least 10 wikia. Either they describe how to make your signature like you have done, the easy way or have both with the advanced version too. But nowhere have I seen it says its forbidden. :::General wiki etiquette is that "personal" templates belong in a user's userspace. The template namespace is meant for public templates like userboxes, infoboxes and so on that are used repeatedly. ::::I agree that signatures should not be a too much of a distraction and should be created for their intended purpose. The Wookieepedia signature policy is a good example, as posted above. I don't see any problem, however, with allowing users to use templates to create their custom signatures. This method was already in place when I came here. Even though the signatures are of personal nature, they are being used repeatedly on a number of talk pages, and allowing users to continue to use this method is in no way causing harm to the wiki, as far as I know. As for it being part of wiki etiquette. I could not find any such information while searching for general wiki etiquette on personal templates. :::::If you noticed what I wrote, you can achieve the same "template" effect without placing the signatures in the "Template" namespace. [[User:SuperSajuuk/Signature|My signature]] is custom and is not in the Template namespace, and I know plenty of wiki's don't allow signatures to go into the Template namespace. The safest, and recommended method, for signatures is to place them as a subpage such as /Sig or /sig1 or /Signature of your own userpage: that way, there isn't a problem if you go to another wiki and they have a rule stating that they don't permit your signature in the Template namespace. -::::It might just be a whole lot easier to have a "No nicknames in signature" rule, as well as a "You must link to your userpage and talkpage, but if no userpage exists, then you may link to just your talkpage" rule. As you know, the purpose of a signature is to identify someone: nicknames that are not the user's actual username breaks the purpose of a signature at all. -I brought this up at least a year ago and it was ignored by the previous sysops, so I'm bringing it up again. This page is not a policy whatsoever, it's just a help document about how to sign stuff. This has allowed users to basically create random nicknames in their signature, obscuring who they are when signing, which is not helpful whatsoever in important consensus discussions.
