Walkthrough[]
When approaching the Shrouded Vale, you will run into a man named Latayron. He will tell you that he saw something very strange in the cave up ahead; when he was camping there for the night, a whole village appeared out of nowhere. He ran out as fast he could, but he will not prevent you from investigating on your own.
Head into the Shrouded Hollow. Inside, a woman named Laniriel will approach you. She will explain the history of this place: they have a pact with the Wilderking; the village will disappear somewhere for many years at a time, then return for a short while every now and then. This usually causes no problems, but this time Wood Orcs have set up camp at the cave's southern entrance. While the village is away, a caretaker tends to its location; a new caretaker is about to be chosen at the Fading Tree, deeper in the hollow. Laniriel will tell you that you can attend this ceremony if you wish; you should go speak with a man named Erunor there.
Head through to the western hallway, but beware that this cave is quite a maze. There, at the Fading Tree, talk to Erunor. Erunor will tell you that his people made an oath to the Wilderking long ago, but he will not reveal the nature of that oath. He will direct you to the old caretaker, Henodras, who is in this same room. Speak with him and he will tell you the nature of the oath the village took. The village swore to protect the Fading Tree, and in return, the Wilderking sends them somewhere without hunger or pain. The village only returns when a new caretaker needs to be chosen.
Once you are done speaking with Henodras, the ceremony will take place. Erunor will be chosen as the new caretaker, but just as the ceremony has been completed, Laniriel will come barging in, shouting that the village is under attack from the Wood Orcs. Speak with her and she will ask you to help in the fight. She will tell you to kill the enemy's leader and burn their tents, so as to create a distraction. To reach the Orc camp, head out of the cave through the southern exit. You will have to fight your way through several waves of Lhurgash Clan Orcs on your way.
War Captain Muzgash will be by the building you see immediately as you leave the cave. Kill him and burn three of the tents in the area, then return to the Shrouded Hollow and talk to Laniriel. He will be happy that the Orcs have been driven off, but she will be less happy that Erunor has been chosen to stay behind as the caretaker. She will reveal that she is pregnant with Erunor's child, and that she wants him to stay with the village to help raise their child and be a family. He does not yet know that she is with child, so she will ask you to go talk to him and convince him to stay with the village.
Head to the Fading Tree. There, you will witness the final part of the ceremoy where Erunor accepts the role of the new caretaker. Speak with him and tell him everything, and he will tell you that he is in a predicament. The Fading Tree is currently weak, and needs to be tended to quickly. The village must depart again with haste so that the caretaker can tend to it, or the tree might die, causing the village to never return. At this point, you can either tell him to stay behind and tend to the tree, or to go with his wife and be a father.
If you tell Erunor to protect the tree, [?]. If you tell him to stay with his wife and child, he will head to Laniriel to tell her. Speak with him again hereafter to finish the quest.
