  • Be careful about leaving items in this house. They CAN be stolen.

A hint that this has happened: a guard will be in the house as you enter it. If that happens make sure you double check what you have left in the chest. BEST TO BUY YOUR OWN HOME ASAP.

    • Agree with "BEST TO BUY YOUR OWN HOME ASAP.", but what home are you talking about?

    • They don't get stolen most places that aren't maked as your home will reset to a default in a set amount of days. He's talking about Uthgerd House he picked it as the topic.

    • if you want a quick place to store items that wont get stolen before you buy your first house in whiterun take the path to the left of  Breezehome and the first house almost straight ahead has an outdoor chest to the right of the house next to a barrel that i have used multiple times that no one steals out of.

    • Obviously, no one is STEALING from these barrels, they RESPAWNING, turning all the stuff you stashed in them into 4 Apples, or whatever relatively worthless item was originally in there.  This brings up another advantage of home ownership in the game.  The trunks & cabinets & lockers & safes in your house don't respawn, but the miscellaneous items that your house was originally decorated with DO.  So, grab that bowl full of pearls, and take all the alchemy ingredients laying around decoratively.  THEY'LL BE BACK!!!

    • that one chest in whiterun outside the house never respawns

    • That's great news for folks just starting out who can't afford a house yet.  Next time I'm in town I'll find it and leave something in it to confirm.

    • I always just quickly run through the first steps of The College of Winterhold or The Thieves Guild as they both give you a space with a selection of storage containers that won't respawn (First room to the right in the Hall of Attainment in Wintehold and first bed to the right when entering the Cistern from The Ragged Flagon in the Thieves Guild). Be careful in your room in the College though, the barrels on the left hand side of the room do respawn and will eat your stuff.

    • The haunted house in Markarth never respawns once the quest is finished (confirmed XBOX). This can serve as a great home.

    • Anything stored in a house you don't own will be removed. The simple answer is to marry Uthgerd, then the house and its contents will be yours including safe storage in the chests.

Pretty decent starter home honestly if you aren't bothered about marriage ingame, and she spends her entire day int the tavern so she never bothers you.

    • Unfortunately I have had stuff disappear (presumably due to respawn) from the chests in Uthgerd's home while married to her. It seems there may be a bug (gasp), and this house can't be trusted. (xbox 360)

    • I used Faendal's House in Riverwood to store many many things for about two weeks, after killing him I'll admit...

But I think when inside a house, you can safely store items in chests (but perhaps not any other form of storage? Not sure) But there is the risk of it being stolen. Outside in barrels etc there's usually a high chance of a respawn at some point in the next few days.

    • Delphine's secret room in Riverwood the sleeping giant inn is a great place for storing items.i have hundreds of things there.

    • Anise's Cabin in my opinion is the best starter home out there. She is a witch & killing her should not be a problem, her basement contains a safe dresser that never respawns & also the cupboard. It also contains an alchemy lab & enchanting table in the basement as well. Killing Anise makes her bed unowned anymore, & it's right next to the start of the game. Inbetween the Guardian Stones & Bleak Falls Barrow.

Edited: Minor Link Correction (Bleak Falls)

    • Slight OT but why do barrels exist seeing as they cant be used for storage in any house in the entire game?

      Never build barrels

    • why kill her when you can have a free room? Poor woman.

Yes, this happened to me as well, when I was MARRIED to her.  Don't trust her OR her house.  I'm pretty sure her and the bard at The Bannered Mare are sneaking around behind my back...(xbox360)
