  • I've read on the quest page itself here on the wiki under the bugs section that some people have a problem with it not starting.  I'm in the same boat as all those guys.  I bought all three DLC's when they first came out for PS3, half off sale for a week and then the next DLC would come out etc but didn't start playing it until now.  I downloaded the 1.9 patch before starting a new character.  I just finished Dawnguard earlier, and I'm starting to wonder if I was suppose to read the book that starts the quest "The Aetherium Wars" while I was in the middle of one of the quests.  I can't really find anymore information about it, but I've tried reading the book multiple times from multiple locations where you find it, dropping it and picking it up, putting it on a bookshelf and reading it, pretty much everything I can think of with no luck.  Anybody got anymore info on this and maybe a fix to make it start?

    Thanks,

    Josh

    • Reading the book won't directly start the quest, it will add a miscellaneous quest "investigate the ruins of Arkngthamz". do this, go further into the ruins, and Katria will appear and the quest will start.

    • in the Lost to the Ages quest Katria says she was killed in an Earthquake.. While Earthquake can occur anywhere in Skyrim after installation of the expansion pack, they are rare. But they seem to be more prone around Markarth and the Reach territory.

I have since come under the impression that Earthquake is what allows that quest to become available. As reading the book The Aetherium Wars does not seem to activate the quest until after you have had such a shake in the game.

I play Skyrim with all expansions, and a few mods. I had that shake happen to me when I was in the bowels of Bleak Falls Burrow by the Dragon Wall, just before I grabbed the Dragonstone.

Latvia disappears at the end and should reappear at the next shard location you go to. You may just not be able to see the shard however if the quest marker continues it shouldn't really matter.

    • I'm having the same issues as everyone else- reading the book and entering Arkngthamz does nothing.  There is no quest started, no miscellaneous quest, the piece of Aetherium disappears, and Katria disappears and does not show back up at any other location.  No quest marker, no journal on the body, nothing.  This is extremely annoying considering it's the ONE achievement I have left to complete.

    • I was having the same problem (no quest starting, no pickable book in Katria's corpse) and it seems it was due to the fact I owned a key item related to this quest ("aetherium fragment", looking like a shiny blue half circle). I picked long before I found the book needed to start the quest, and apparently the fact that I had it in my inventory was causing the problem : I just dropped it on the ground, read the book and the quest magicaly started.

Hope this will help some of you.

    • Same trouble here. And yes, I have the Aetherium Fragment in my inventory. The above fix sounds great, but my game won't let me drop it. =(

        Loading editor
    • Ok, I'm the same guy that posted last. Fragment is in inventory, it wouldn't let me drop it, and no quest after reading the book. This is what worked for me. Go ahead to Arkngthamz and clear it, once you pick up the second piece of aetherium the quest updates to retrieve the pieces and is marked 2/4 complete.

    • Could there be another fix? I tried the above solutions and none of them worked.

Same here, the quest appears to be broken for me. I can't go back to a previous save where Dawngaurd wasn't installed or activated, and I can't even re read the book.

    • Do you have to complete Dawnguard to start this quest, cause none of the soluotions above worked.

    • From UESP:

"This quest will not start if the player has visited Mzulft or Deep Folk Crossing prior to reading The Aetherium Wars."

If either of these are the case, PC users can install the Unofficial Dawnguard Patch, which fixes the problem. Console users are just out of luck.

    • I´ve done this quest several times and now: reading the "Aetherium Wars" didn´t give me misc quest to go investigate the ruins of Arknthamz. I went anyway. Katria appeared, but no journal on her body (even though she said to pick it up). I pushed on trying not to care about that, and well, I just finished the ruin and found the first aetherium piece. Only her dialogue changed a bit (because of the missing journal), but other than that, everything´s good so far.. makes me believe there´s another misc quest or something that messes with this one, idk :p

Everything will progress as normal (you can find the other three Atherium shards) until you reach the Atherium Forge. The shards are supposed to uncover a secret passage to the Forge, but it does not open.

    • I HAD this problem, but no more. so I had picked up the shard, and nothing, no books or anything would help. What I did was drop ( on the ground) the book and shard(s). this then gave me the secondary quest of checking out the ruins. And which also returned Her journal. the journal is definitely the key to all this. I had a few miss fires and reloads, I think its due to the nature of getting the quest like this. but I finally got this completely finished and now on to the last Legendary dragon. Good luck, all.

    • Picking up quest items before the quest will usually break it, seeing as you already have the fragments if you did get it to start the quest would likely get stuck when you get to the collecting stage.

I would start a new game and avoid the Lost to the Ages locations until you can get to a copy of the The Aetherium Wars to try and start the quest by reading it, all the dlc can be very buggy unfortunately though.

I'm not sure if what ZGavin said above is true about the earthquakes but i also don't know if its false.

    • You could try dropping and picking back up everything you have to do with the quest. It's better to star the quest by reading The Aetherium Wars book though to make sure it's done in the intended order, quests can get bugged otherwise especially this one. Like 112.120.173.40 said on PC the unofficial patch fixes some bugs (but not always retroactively), and on the PC theres commands but they don't always work on really buggged quests. If you don't have the quest at all you could try -

I knew where arkangthamz was from memory of when i played on xbox and went straight there, katria whipsered in my ear and stuff but there was no journal. i continued on hoping i could get through without it but i used console commands to add it to my inventory after arkangthamz because i needed katria's map. I went to all of the places and gathered the shards from each place not noticing that i never actually had the quest. now i cant open bthalft and i cant do anything about it. i tried dropping everything then reading the book but i didn't get the quest. I even tried dropping everything then using the "startquest" and the "resetquest" but the quest just wont appear. Is there anything i can do?

    • Okay so I just stumbled onto the ruin Arkngthamz while running around and such. Similar problems to those listed above. I met her ghost but couldn't find the journal (is it supposed to be on her body or can you sometimes find it elsewhere?) she even sassed me for not grabbing it. At that point I looked up the quest here and backtracked to read the book. Still nothing, no quest in misc or the normal one. (one poster mentioned that if you visit Mzulft or Darkwater that you just kinda fail) and I already did the mages guild quest line. I've found the other three pieces with help from the guide but the one in Mzulft is no where to be seen. Can anyone tell me where it's supposed to spawn so I can check to see if it's really gone or if I just ran passed it?

I've got all the shards but no quest start i read the book prior to collecting the shards, the journal wasn't appearing, it sucks... Im really frustrated with it and someone needs to figure out how to sort this out

        Loading editor
    • Did you try reading a different copy of the book?

The quest should have already been active when you were with Katria. If you can, drop the shards, then read the book. If that doesn't work, you may have to reload a save before getting the shards.

You can always try to continue the quest according to the page, but that always brings the risk of more bugs.

At that point, you may just have to reload a save before you obtained the last shard.

You can also try to go through the places where you got the shards again, and see if Katria is there, glitched out. Perhaps you can spark some dialogue with her if you find her that will get you to the forge.

        Loading editor
    • You've tried doing botton left, bottom right, top late, top right, and then bottom middle?

        Loading editor
    • Hmmm.   I've played this on both XBox 360 and XBox One, and latterly on PS4.   On the XBox 360 it worked as it should (i.e. you get the quest "Lost to the Ages" and it plays through without a problem).   I remember, for what it's worth, that both Dawnguard and Dragonborn were DLC back then.

I've subsequently played the game through without problems on XBox One,but (not knowing there might be a problem with order and all that) the quest started properly, so I'd have to put it down to blind luck.

After I found out about this glitch, both the XBox One and the PS4 gave me all the above-mentioned problems when I started from scratch and played through - one time I went and got all four pieces of aetherium before I went the Arkngthamz.   I reloaded an early save on both consoles, but both are broken, regardless of how I approach Arkngthamz.   Both the XBox One and PS4 games were those with all the DLC included, so my somewhat uneducated guess would be that there's something in the "Special Edition" of both console games that means that they're "special" because they're busted!   Grrr!

Lastly, when I get through to the "boss" tonal ringers at the end of this ruin, Karita chirps up that I didn't pick up her journal (duh) suggesting that, as it does, she gives you the order of the first two tones in her journal.   And just for laughs, she then suggests that I could go back and pick up her journal (try anything once, right).   Well, I'd taken everything she had, which she complained about (prude), but just in case I went back to the start and had another look.   She still didn't have the journal.   For completeness, she also suggests that maybe one of the other dead bodies in the final tonal lock cave might have something which'd help.   One of them does have a snippet of paper, but that doesn't activate the quest.  At a couple of stages near her body, I had a look around on the floor and in the pockets of a couple of dead Falmers, but couldn't find a journal.

All this to say that the quest is broken.   My last effort will be to start the game over, go read the book in the College at the start and hope that the quest kicks off from there.   I'm not overly keen to go back to square one, but I just might if only to prove a point.

Level 29 and below, I received the objective, no problem, but the moment I hit that 30 mark, no objective.

Not late at all, as some players like myself are playing through this quest now. I've completed the quest before, likely getting the quest from the book before level 30, but on a new character, I am unable to start the quest by reading the book or going directly to Arkngthamz. I was likely overleveled by the time I first read the book on my new save. I am not using any mods (completely unmodified game, no unofficial patch or anything), playing special edition (with all the DLC).

I haven't tried dropping the book but I have read it at least 3 times in 3 different places. No quest given on all three occassions. Arriving at the ruins to start the quest "manually", still nothing. But at least it's good to know that there's a level mark that when hit, prevents you from starting the quest...

    • I'm having trouble as well. The journal isn't showing up. I've dropped the 3 shards I have and read the book but nothing. I'm wondering if it's due to currently being level 3 and haven't gone to Riverwood yet. I know that the quest can be started at pretty much any level so could me not having started the main story be causing issues?

        Loading editor
    • I think that you having the shards so early in the game is probably the issue; I assume you used commands can cause problems in the game, and quests not starting is one of them. Try dropping the shards, then reading The Aetherium Wars. If that doesn't work, bring the book with you to Arkngthamz, and talk to Katria after she warns you away. Try reading the book again if that fails.

    • I'm actually playing the special edition on the PS4 so no commands. I went and collected the shards physically. Again I've not yet started the main quest line. After leaving helgen I bailed on everything and went for the shards to get the crown.
