How to fix the Castle Volkihar Gate not opening (Blood Line) For PS3 maybe Xbox360. You have to unstall the update this will take out all of the DLC and the 1.9 update. If you have Dragon Weapons I would suggest sell everything you know that came from Dawnguard to get the gold this will not correct it self it will stay the same amount you saw it before you unstall the update. After you uninstall the update you have to re-install from Dragonborn to Hearthfire load your game and save this will only bring back what you already have done, none of the Dawnguard will be there and you can restart fresh. So yes you will lose some thing from that DLC, then re-install Dawnguard. Now three houses all of what you have done for Dragonborn, your family still there. So yes if you didn't like your one home or all three this will be great time to start that area over again just stop at Dragonborn. Note: make sure you clean your house out all the raw material for smithing, soul gems and ingredients. drop them in the homes you can buy in the cities just make sure you don't put anything in the kids room chest or it will be gone.
I wouldn't do anything the OP suggested. It is very sloppily written and not very clear on the main point which is "how to get past the gate". What does deleting then reinstalling all 3 dlcs have to do with one glicth occurring in Dawnguard?
Sorry got excited when I found out it worked look at it after wishing I could of change things, I was like you guys lost with no help.
Ok you need to go to your game data utility to delete "Skyrim update", this will take out all three DLC and update.
before going back in to the game you need to install DragonBorn and HearthFire to get everything back for them two DLC it will act like nothing happen for them two. then go in to your save game and save again. Only thing will be effected is all the DawnGuard DLC the castle will not be found the cave where serana is, will not be on your map. Then go and install Dawn Gaurd it will start up from the beginning where the gaurd tell you about them.
I was saying if you want to be a cheap bugger and want the gold you might want to sell the Dragon Weapons if you made them cause they belong to Dawn Guard DLC. The gold will be part of the game it self not the DLC.
If you want to rebuild your Houses then stop at installing Dragon Born then save. But if you have armor, smithing material, things you got from Dragon Born in chest in these homes you build. I was saying move them to one of the houses in the city where you can buy home like whiterun breeze home before not desiding to puting that DLC Hearthfire on or if you don't everything will be lost. if it in your houses that you build.
If you desided to put it in the chest in the kids room in breeze home don't put anything there cause that leave with Hearthfire. Only thing you lose from Hearthfire is kids and build your own home. Your wife is part of Skyrim she will be set back to where you met her and act like she just got merried to you asking where you want to live. All you need to do to rebuild, just go to Dawnstar,Falkreath,Marthal to buy the lots again no mission there stuart act like you already did the mission for them.
the ghost of serana is still with you cause the game it self skyrim make it seem she there but really not so don't worry just go to dawn gaurd and start the mission go threw the whole thing right up to where you deside vamp or not to vamp this will correct it self and the ghost of serana is gone and you can go back to asking people to join you.
if you did desided to rebuild your new home just remember you need to adopt a child first for your wife to acknowalge the new home or she will just have hers and one of the one from the city.

cause if you install the two DLC Dragon Born and HearthFire the game it self Skyrim only pick up on them two ths is why you save again after you load your save game. so yes get yourself away from the castle when doing these steps.
see thing come to me after I tell you and left this, remember these are add on to the game not a game it self so what your doing when you install one add on and load your game with out the other add on you are really killing the other two add on, acting like you never had them . So knowing this how it work cause base game is Skyrim this also give people chance to change there house if they don't like them they just go Dragon and Dawn Guard if they made it threw the gate. and load the game and save it again with out Hearthfire add on then go install it again and load that game presto you don't have your houses you build there where never there but the town you get lot from will still know you finish the mission cause it part of the main game base Skyrim. I hope this help you understand
Can someone reiterate the long posts in plain English? I'm not trying to be a D-bag or anything, but it seems like English isn't his/her second language and I'm having a hard time understanding exactly what needs to be done and/or what can go wrong.
I used the method of holding up a plate to the gate at eye level and hit whirlwind sprint. it got me through the gate and I could access the castal and continue the quest. a glitch to fix a glitch, shame. Unfortunatly this does not open the gate and you have to use this method every time you need to access the door to the castal. LAME
I just tried this method, and it works just as the original poster said it would. I was so nervous to give it a go, but I was able to keep everything in my house from the Hearthfire DLC. The only thing it appears to have done is erase any instance of content that originated from Dawnguard like the crossbow. Yes, it is nerve wracking proposition, but I would give it a try if you are experiencing this bug.
Okay I came here because I also experienced this bug (Xbox360) and it's almost game breaking. So I decided to add a contribution just to clarify what's been said on this forum. The bug IS caused by discovering Castle Volkihar before Serana is in your company, as far as I can tell her dialogue proc on the bridge is directly connected to the "Map Updated" prompt. This is terrible coding by 'Thesda probs due to general laziness, but that's beside the point. Fortunately I had a numbered save before I met Serana, so all wasn't lost. I'm not sure if this will work if she's already with you, or what would happen if you tried this while being saved in Dawnguard content. So get away from Dim Hollow/Volkihar Castle and save somewhere in Skyrim. I just went back to my Heljarchen Hall House and hard saved. Now go back to your dashboard and delete the Dawnguard DLC content from your HDD, as well as the 1.9 Title Update. Now I did this just for good measure, basically to let the game know I wasn't f*cking around. Re-launch Skyrim WITHOUT Dawnguard and it will ask to re-download patch 1.9, do this and load the save you made IN NORMAL SKYRIM. It will tell you that "this game save requires content that is no longer present, do you wish to proceed". Obviously yes you do, then when it loads SAVE AGAIN WITHOUT DAWNGUARD DLC. Now you updated your save to not include the Dawnguard location. Now go back to your dashboard and re-install/download Dawnguard, reload that save and you're golden. You will have to talk to the Dawnguards again, as well as re-clear Dim Hollow, but it's no big deal, better than having a broken quest line. I didnt have to remove Hearthfire or Dragonborn to do this, and all my stuff was still there, it basically just told the game that I hadn't discovered the Dawnguard mission yet. This does work and I had the Volkihar gates open as soon as I got there. So happy day-walking gentlemen, let's kill some mutherf*ckin vampires. Bethesda do your job please...
I have a PS3. This fix works. But as the original contributor stated, along with all of Dawnguard being removed, so it goes with all your dragon bone wepons. So if that matters, then sell them off before doing this fix. Now you might ask, "who has the cash to buy my legendary dragonbone bow, it's worth like 15,000 gold?" Well, the easiest way is to go to one of the mages at the collage of Winterhold, buy 15k worth of items, then sell them your bow. But just buy enough for one wepon, then sell it, then buy for the second wepon and then sell it, etc. The reason for this is I've discovered that if I buy too much, like over $30,000 worth, then when I go to sell, the amount is not added to my gold total nor deleated from the sellers "gold on hand." You can end up selling everything and then getting nothing.
Here's a little more detail:
1. Sell off all your dragon wepons. Just wepons, not armor. Save your game.
2. Exit game and go to the main menu.
3. Go into the "Game data utility". This file is located about 5 spaces above the "Skyrim" game icon on your main menu.
4. Enter the file by clicking the "x" on your controller. Once inside, you will see 2 "Skyrim" icons somewhere among all your other game icons. One is for the game, the other for the 1.9 update (Use the left joystick on your controller to scroll up and down). Center the update icon on your screen so you can read the data. Press the triangle button to get the options. Select "delete" and push the "x" button on your controller.
The update, Dragonborn, Hearthfire and Dawnguard are now deleted from your system.
Start Skyrim. A message will automatically appear that says "1.9 update available". It will automatically load. Once this is done, you will eventually be taken to the load screen where you are asked if you want to load the last saved game. You can if you want, or just exit. I went to an earlier game, I loaded it, checked the map, my lakeside home was gone, no link to Solstheim was gone, I had no Dragonbone wepons and the Vampire Castle was gone from the map.
Now to reload my add-ons. I looked all around for them and couldn't find them. Finally, I just re-downloaded them from the playstation store. Here are the steps.
Go to the Play Station Store. (It's the "shopping" bag icon just above the Skyrim logo on your main menu). Once inside, again, select the "Play Station Store" icon. It's the blue one with the game controller on it. Press "X" on your controller.
Use the left joystick to scroll down to "View Downloads." Press X on your controller. Find "Dragonborn" and select "download". You can download it without having to pay for it. It takes a while, but once it's downloaded it will automatically install.
Do the same thing for "Hearthfire."
Open up Skyrim to your most recent game. Re save it and close.
You should be good to go.

This might be a little late, but if you follow the steps above BEFORE doing the save with the update deleted. If you update the game to 1.9 and then exit the game, download your dragonborn and hearthfire DLC, don't download your dawnguard! If you then load your game with those two DLC downloaded, you'll keep all your previous information minus the Dawnguard DLC. So you won't lose your house or Dragonborn gear. Once you make the new save, THEN you download the Dawnguard DLC, then everything should work in order.
I'm on PS3 and I just held up a plate flat against the left side of the gate, Whirlwind Sprinted through it, and was able to enter. Once I did the dialogue continued as normal. Took me a few tries, but it worked
Get a wooden plate, jump up on railing of the right right side, walk up to the wall with the wooden plate at eye level and push your way in. It may take a few times, but it WILL WORK. and you don't have to uninstall and may loose your process along the way. Once you've gliched into the gated area, serana will still be on the other side, so just walk in the door then she will appear next to you, and the game will proceed as normal. The only down side is you will have to glitch in every time and fast travel to get out. But you won't loose your data or have to get serana again.
PS4 - ran into the gate not opening, most likely because I found the castle earlier in my random travels. Wasn't going to reload 10 hours previous. Thankfully the wooden plate trick works! Thank you for that. Worked on the left side of the gate.
I find the best way through is just to use a plate or platter, go up fairly close to the gate itself, then use whirlwind sprint to clip through. Works much more easily than forcing through the walls. Thanks for the ideas guy!
For the ps4 the plate only works to get through the gate. The castle door itself still won't open. Been trying for a few months. Spent hours and hours reading everyone's methods and I still have no luck. I have even deleted all my mods and went back to saved files before they were nodded. Still nothing :(I'm even at level 40.
