  • Gaiden Shinji has always kind of sounded like the Roman ruler Vespasian to me. Both Vespasian and Gaiden Shinji were war generals who saw the start of a massive collesium, and died before its completion.

    • Sounds Japanese to me. Gaiden in japanese means tale or anecdote as used in Ninja Gaiden or Fire Emblem Gaiden, and Shinji is a pretty common name in Japan.

I was suprised that someone with such a Japanese name (and who reminded me of Sun Tzu) was a Altmer and not a Akaviri as a lot of Akavir is based on Asia like the Imperials are based on Romans.

    • @AzuraKnight, how did you find out he was an Altmer? I've searched and searched, I've never found anything describing his race.

        Loading editor
    • he isn't and it's likely he was akavir.

    • Gaiden Shinji was the leader of the Order of Diagna. The Order of Diagna was from Hammerfell. So then basing it off that logic its very likely he was a Redguard.

    • @MugoUrth he died after it's completion it even says it on the wiki page because the siege of orsinium happened shortly after the completion of the arena

    • It's very likely he was from Yokuda or Akavir...

    • The only thing I can speculate is that he was most likely a Redguard/Akaviri immigrant to Hammerfell (not necessarily first generation mind you and tbh I don't know how all that worked back then but I do know that the Yokudans were redguards and they eventually settled what is now Hammerfell) so I think it is a reasonable possibility. But as I said, he could be a Akaviri Yokudan that emigrated to Hammerfell, like if an Irish-American were to emigrate to Mexico if that makes it easier to understand.

    • Im 100% shure that he was a Redguard or a Yokudan . AND NOT an Akavir. Because they wanished from Tamriel after Remans heir . And that was around the begining of the Second Era.....

    • Oh sorry I didn't see that the Siege Of Orsinium was at the first era. But still 100% that he was an Yokudan or Redguard.

    • He was a mainstream hipster who died in a mainstream siege that was really mainstream

    • Seriously? You necro this thread with that? If you necro a thread it should be something really good. Not that.

    • I don't think he cares.

    • Sounds like a reference to this thread where me and man of steak noted how much of a hipster Gaiden Shinji was.

Good question... i have no idea i must have read it somewhere but after almost two years i can't remember or find it (i vaguely remember a site that looked like The Imperial Library but wasn't it). Like people have said after he was probably Redguard going from the name and as he was leader of the Order of Diagna along with being a brilliant swordsman.

Sorry for bringing the thread back up again.

Edit - And now we know.

    • while the dispute continues about what race gaiden shinji was one thing is for certain.      he was a male. thought i would clear that up

    • Everyone knows Gaiden was just a scizophrenic prophet who wandered Tamriel for no purpose whatsoever.

One day, someone shot his guide in the shin and Gaiden never forgot that. He ran back into town and started telling people about guarding their shins and would guide them through forests, avoiding bandits.

      Hence the name "Guidin' Shinji".

As for the Arena, well he was scizophrenic.

    • Some people think that Gaiden Shinji was a Redguard because of his name. Well, his name sounds a lot more Akaviri than Yokudan to me. The only known Akaviri human name that has been recorded (to my knowledge) was Akaviri Commander Mishaxhi. The spelling structure of these names sounds similar, plus there is only 1 Redguard who has a name that ends with an i, Destri Melarg, whos name sounds completely different.

He could just have an Akaviri name but be another race, but his name definitely looks to be of Akaviri origin.

    • Just to update everyone, Gaiden Shinji now appears in the Orsinium DLC. His race is confirmed to be Redguard.

His name is likely Yokudan, given how he lived only 200 years after his people landed on Tamriel.

There is a conversation in the game with the woman researcher that says if he was Redguard his body would be exposed and not entombed in a sarcophagus, so nothing to confirm his Race, yet but going with his armor and name i would say he's of Akaviri lineage but he could be Yokudan too.

    • He's a Redguard. Head over to UESP. The Redguard have alot of Japanese culture entwined with them.
