It's recently been brought up that the {{1st}} template should be phased out, being that everything in the Appearances section is already in chronological order. Same for the {{1stm}} template which would also be listed in order of first mentioned, so the {{mo}} template is enough in that case.

This is a task that can be easily fixed with a bot.

Any additional comments in agreement or disagreement, feel free to respond.

    • I'd like to add that {{1stm}} is already hardly used by any articles, and also that it really isn't being added to any more.

I say if we're going to only use {{mo}} for mentions, then we should do the equivalent for normal appearances: don't state whether it was the first appearances or not, simply that it was there. The chronological order of the appearances section should be enough to determine which game the article's topic first appeared or was mentioned in.

I agree with Kroq-gar78 and believe that {{Mo}} should be the only appearances template needed.

    • I support the removal of the first appearance template for two reasons:

      1. Being listed in chronological order is sufficient.
      2. The use of the template creates inconsistency in articles with one appearance. Some people feel compelled to add it, while others feel compelled to remove it. Monitoring its use to regulate this problem would require time and effort that could be better spent on other matters.

    • I believe the only reason people are compelled to add the template is because we're all so used to it being there. If we "formally" decide to remove it, I believe people will stop putting it back, especially once they see that very few pages have the template left.

I agree. I've used it a lot even with only one appearance simply for the sake of consistency, despite my own opinion that it was not needed, nor useful. I don't have as much faith in people as you do though; I'd delete the template immediately after the bot finishes removing it from articles to prevent it from being added.

    • I'm all for phasing it out.  As stated, the chronological ordering of the appearances of a page's subject essentially precludes its use.  Llittle - if any - more needs to be said, in my opinion.

    • I don't think it matters on pages like Glacial Cave Because its a minor page, but on bigger pages like Akatosh i think it should say that his avatar first appeared in Oblivion, Only time in my opinion we should write Appeared in "..." on minor pages is if that minor page location or character have appeared in 2 games.

    • RE: G0LD3NF1RE's message:
G0LD3NF1RE was present when we agreed on IRC that it could just be written on a page, such as Akatosh, that Akatosh made an appearance in Oblivion in avatar form, without the need to create a template.

If there are no more replies on this matter by August 7th, I will begin phasing out of the {{1st}} and {{1stm}} templates via DwemerBot.

    • Fine by us.

    • I do agree, sorry for not seing this until now. I haven't been on IRC too for some time...

    • DwemerBot is now running and should have the 1st template cleared out in a few hours. There are around 13,000+ pages to go through.

    • And it's all done now! Everything has been cleared out and anything that was linked to the 1st and 1stm templates have been removed and unlinked.

The {{1st}} and {{1sm}} templates have also been deleted to prevent anyone from trying to use it in articles again.
