As title says. I'm currently debating on which race I want to be for a thief class, Imperial or Nord. I saw that Imperials always find a little bit more gold than usual when it is encountered, but does anyone know how much extra is found? Is it a decent bonus?

I wouldn't worry about it.Skyrim has too many gold aleady, and the amount of quests just eases it up(i've gone to Solstheim at level 30,came back with 40k+ gold).
I create a Speech Mage Bard-Like Imperial build. At the first quest, Unbound, I had made suficcient money to get 2 important spells for the build. On the Frostbite Spider part of the Helgen Keep, I had found two valuable rings just looting the spiders...
And when I speak to Alvor to take supplies (I like Stormcloaks, but, early, chose the Imperial side just for the Act 1 of the Main Quests, sounds more usefull), Alvor gave me an Enchanted Ring!
The Imperials passive, as you see, don't work only for gold.
Combine this with some Speech gear and perks, Prowler's Profit (Stones of Barenziah), and you make much gold, I had much more gold than my main Save, and got the achievment of the 100.000 gold.
It's nothing late, but earlier, saves you to chop wood thousands times....
I'm far too late to the party but when I played skyrim back then, and now again due to everybody going on about Special Edition, I had the experiance as you. I was finding jewels and jewelry, as well as far greater loot, on the randomest enemies, and more to the point, the extra loot has NEVER appeared as frequently as it did on my imperial characters...
I fully agree that the ability is doing a hell of alot more than giving you 2-10 extra gold every time you loot things.
If people look at the bugs section of the referenced uesp page, you will see that unless you have the unofficial patch installed or make changes via the developer' console, all players have Imperial Luck applied to their character immediately after walking out of Helgen, regardless of the race chosen. It just doesn't show up in the active effects menu like it does when you select to play as an imperial. It's similar to the Prowler's Profit effect you can get from restoring the Crown or Barenziah. The effect doesn't show up in your active effects menu, but it most definitely works as advertised.
I've been playing a test Imperial for 10 hours. Plenty of containers still only have 2-8 gold. The ability is pretty useless, you'll make more just taking haggling and getting the dragon priest mask, haggling necklace, etc. Voice of the Emperor can be used to get double pay out of a few quests, but hasn't had any significant applications either. I'm scrapping the char and choosing a useful race.
