    • I love Solitude and whatever the surrounding area is called (Think it is Haafinger) I just find everything I could want there. For shops you got an alchemy, general, clothing, and 2 smiths(fletcher counts as one). You get one of the nicest houses around, equal of the one you got in Skingrad in Oblivion. It is nice weather since I get tired of seeing snow 24/7, the town feels alive compared to some of the others with people and guards more or less no matter where you look. And I personally like Imperials more than Stormcloaks since they don't bash on you like Stormcloaks normally do( I am usually always one of the 3 Mer, usually Altmer :) )  The place rarely gets attacked by dragons from what I have seen, every other hold I seem to always run into a dragon attacking, hell Riverwood got wiped out for me, 3 dragons attacked at once and killed the smith and general store merchant, thus ruining the existance of teh town.

As for the countryside, if your into Alchemy, the town itself as well as all around the place has majority of what you will want. There is a lot of dungeons and such around. I just think of all places to settle down, this place would seem the best.

My only dislike is there isn't many giant camps around, at least from waht I have seen, I love killing giants. I can also see people hating this place if they don't like the Imperials, I honestly don't mind since I could care less about teh divines since they don't even play anything in the game, a meh buff every now and then, woo....and the Thalmor don't bother me. I did the mission in Marcarth from the one Thalmor, and I am also an Altmer, hell I kinda wish they were a joinable faction, I found it interesting listening to Elenwen talk about the Thalmor.

@ 72.238.141.241: I usually play as an Altmer too, however my Altmer is very anti-Thalmor. (They don't like him either, they put a hit on him in one playthrough.)

Valen Sarethi: Not all Altmer are 'yuck' (Legate Fasendil is a good example of that. My Dragonborn is a good Altmer too but since he isn't 'scripted' I won't count him.)

Anyway, my favorite hold is Falkreath, mainly because I live there.

    • I like Whiterun hold for its diverse environments--Forests, plains, mountains, river valleys, the works. The city itself is nice too and has a lot of good vendors, so I can usually get any supplies I need there.

My house is in Hjallmarch, which even though my children find it scary, I like the misty atmosphere. The only problem is that the city of Morthal has almost nothing useful in it, but that's not a big issue.

I would like the Reach the best, but the Forsworn raids and Silver-Blood economic and cultural monopoly are off-putting.

    • I am with the above contributor who chose Solitude, for almost all the same reasons. And I think Proudspire is a beautiful house, each to his/her own. But I really hate the Thalmor. My character is a High Elf, but I can't tolerate Thalmor. I don't care much for the racism in some of the more Nord type holds at all. How could you not love the view of the bay from the balcony? And no bandit attacks, no giant attacks. I left Lake View manor, which I truly loved, due to the almost daily attacks. Ridiculous. Solitude has the most flowers out of the whole of Skyrim, auroras sometimes at night, it's gorgeous. The children love it too. The only bad thing about the most costly home in Skyrim...they left out the cooking pot in the game! Good grief.

    • I would have to say that Hjarlmarch is my favuorite because of the dark swampy atmosphere and the vampire mission, also the ingredients is good there too, it is part swamp, forrest, mountains and snow enfiroments and you can sell and buy allot from the Imperial ans stormcloak camps, but it is mainly the enfiroment.

Then i would go for Eastmarch because of the forrests and hot spring areas, but the dwarven mines to the east are some of the best places to explore in the game, there are allot of secret places and secret entrances to places and huge old forts to explore, but the only dowside is the amount of bears.

Thirdly it would have to be the Whiterun plains because of the nostalgia and for the fact it is so open and is at the centre of the entire map, i cant describe that feeling of listening to the music at dusk or dawn and looking at the surrounding moutains and seeing all the castles and monuments in the distance it gives the game a real open evolving world feel.

CANT WAIT FOR THE REVEAL OF ES6, whenever it is gonna happen.

    • It's so hard for me to choose just one favorite hold!  I love The Reach, because of it's land and how things feel so wild there. The cliffs, the plants, the Dwemer ruins (and, might I add, one with vomiting inhabitants. Freaked out the first time I saw that.), the occasional waterfalls and the Forsworn..I love it.

I also really like Falkreath for some reason. It might be because it has a lot of spawns, hostile or not, which adds to the fun factor, or just how the forests are along with the lake, or even it's town, but I've always liked that hold. Has a certain "feel" to it, like Markarth has.

The only reason I didn't add Riften on here is because it has an insane amount of bears, which always try and kill me whenever I'm within a hundred feet of them. And it's not just one bear, it has to be like two or three. Then throw in  a wandering troll who's just been chilling along with a Hagraven, and an assassin that's been following me the entire time. Maybe even an Arch Pyromancer in there too, they like to join in a lot. I mean, that can be fun if it's random and all that, but it get's annoying after awhile when that seems to happen within every fourty steps I take, like they know when I'm coming and they've just been waiting for me to get there.

Other than that Riften is pretty nice.

    • My favorite hold is The Rift, because of many reasons. I love the graphics when you are walking on the roads. It's just beautiful. And there's Riften, too. Even though it supposed to be a 'sad' city, I found it amusing. There are lots of quest to do from the citizens and the fact that there is A city under the city just seems awesome to me. You can marry here too, so it's pretty fun. And let's not forget Honeyside, which is, in my opinion, the best house of Skyrim. It has plenty chests and such, 2 doors, one leading to Skyrim and the other to Riften, fences quite nearly (If caravans are passing by) , and it's garden. At least for me, it's the place were more thieves can be found. This is quite useful for looting them (After guards or yourself kills them) and getting gems and such (One time i got 3 diamonds!). And there's the Thieves guild, too. It can be very fun, and a way to get fast money by doing small jobs. I have never seen Riften being attacked by a Dragon (And i spend  most of my in-game time here) Anyway, I do have seen dragons outside, like in the stables. I just can't help feeling The Rift like my home in Skyrim.

    • I would have to say The Rift. They have pretty much every type of store there: an alchemy shop, 4 generel shores The Pawned Prawn and 3 of the stalls in the marketplace (one of which is one of the 3 people who I have ever managed to buy butter from), an Inn, a food merchant , a brewery, a blacksmith, a fishery (granted its outside the city but its still really close), a stable (right outside the gate), a mage, a fence (in the Ragged Flagon), and if you finish the special jobs for Delvin you can get an extra armoror, fletcher, blacksmith, and alchemist in the Flagon. The only one type that i don't think they have is a clothes store. Also it is the city that you get married in and you are really close to the Ragged Flagon. The house (which I still haven't bought) can be bought for as little as 9,300 coins (8550 if you get the childs room insted of enchanting table) if you buy the house for 5,000 instead of 8,000. The only downside I could see is not being able to have you kid and enchanting table at the same time in the house.

    • I like Solitude and its architecture, it feels like a real city and I suppose it's the safest one in the game (even if I saw 1-2 dangerous things like a dragon attack).

Winterhold (not the part with houses) is cool too, I like the college under the snow.

    • I pretty much like all of them. I like the game's cities...

My favorite above all others is Whiterun . I dunno what is there, but its atmosphere... The people... The surroundings... It makes me fell warm in a coldland, with kind and respectful people. Not to mention the Jarl is the most protective, from the ones I know 'till now. As for the hold itself, the scenery is beautiful, and the villages have the most hardworking and honest people I've ever met.

My second favourite is Riften (The Rift). The city is cool, with good working people (Haelga may agree with me XD) Even with the Black-Briar thing going on, and the thieves guild, these are things people can get used to. As for the hold itself, it feels like it is the warmest, and I like it's forest feeling.

(Note: I have never gone to Dawnstar (The Pale), nor Falkreath).

    • Favorite Hold? Winterhold.

Why? Because of Septimus Signus' Outpost, the northernmost location on the map... and, of course, the College of Winterhold.

Something about the outpost's utter isolation from everything else is oddly appealing.  It's a shame it can't be made into a player-home, and any item you store there will eventually disappear. I also like that the "Beneath the Ice" bgm plays in the background there, too.

As for the College? Hey, it's a high spire on a cliff overlooking the hold. What's not appealing about that?

    • Favourite city is Markarth, especially at night as it looks stunning, and favourite hold is the Reach. I have one level 40 character, a forsworn native (live another life mod), who has never left the hold and is STILL finding things to do.

Having said that, each of the holds have their charms and their challenges. I think my least favourite has to be Hjaalmarch - becaus it feels so glum to me. It is also impossible to spell!
