Those few here, who have followed the recent events connected with C0DA and Tomorrowind, are knowledgeable about the new "state" of TES (or C0DA) universe.
For those who did not. Michael Kirkbride has released his new novel and with it promised to end the "Canon Wars." For better understanding of what this abolishment of "canon" really means, here are few statements:
C0DA is a living, collaborative, Open Source universe. This space is here to store additions, reflections, corrections, and connections to it. We will update as the project develops, new covers breaking the time periods. Tell your own C0DA, or expand on someone else's, below. Statement on the Tomorrowind page |
The structure of our freedom isn't rules-free. We endeavor to not harm another's canon in the cloud. I understand and appreciate your discomfort, just not at the expense of others'. I don't really care about your view of canon... except when you use that stance to rudely dismiss huge amounts of joy. I thank you for your sincerity in recognizing that your double-talk. It's not doom, or gloom, and no one is taking anything from you. No one. And similarly there's no reason to partake in a discussion in a thread named after a movement that very vocally made it known that it was no longer bound by the rules of canon. This reddit also has no reason to defend C0DA, but it does have the right to prevent people from actively disrupting talks about it. |
I think you are oversimplifying what "There is no Canon" is meant to mean. Sure, some-one on here can conceivably say "In my TES there are no Khajiits, so anything that has to do with Khajiits is not my canon." But that ends that conversation about Khajiits, and ruins everyone's fun. TESLore has always had a rule that merely talking about something's canocity is not allowed, because it ends the conversation that others are having under the assumption that what they are interpreting 'exists'. Right now, the day after C0DA is released, everyone is going to be circlejerking about how now there is no canon and fanfics are real and muatra is vivec's penis, but 4 months from now when TESO goes public, or 2-3 years from now when TESVI is released, TESlore is still mostly just going to be talking about and analyzing the new lorebooks and lore-oreiented quests, answering old question and creating new question about Bethesda's TES universe, and Kirkbride's TES universe, and any other TES universe that enough people in the community feel passionate about discussing. The way one is meant to receive C0DA, in my opinion, is that when some-one does what TESlore does, interpret the TES universe, that reading-in-between-the-lines that they did does not have a definite yes value or no value, but should be willing regarded as maybe. Example: The novella and its content " The Lusty Argoninan Maid" have a definite reality in the Bethesda TES universe. Who "really" wrote it? Maybe it was Cassius Curio. But he died in the 3rd era during the time of the Nerevarine, and TLAM existed during the 2nd Era. Did some-one else write it then? Maybe. Was Cassius Curio actually 1,000s of years old when he died in Morrowind? Maybe? Did two independent authors spontaneously pen a novel about a Sultry Houseservant Lizardess? Maybe. That's up for you to decide, and then share your decision with the greater TES community, who will then discuss its merits and value. Maybe you wil convice a few people you canon is the best canon, and maybe you won't. But if you do hope to convince others, you still better have a well-researched top post with fancy reddit formatting and hyperlinks. The point isn't about the truth, it is about the truth-seeking. Its not that the lore and continuity of the TES games are now erased from discussion, but instead that arguing about canoncity of other's interpretation of that work is ultimately a frivolous externality to the real fun of TESlore. That this incredibly well fleshed out universe still has INFINITE amount of information to discuss and interpret, and to use in the creation of your own personal version of the TES universe. And finally the question is... how do we, as a Wiki deal with this? How do we have both Bethesda canon and Zenimax canon on a page, without making our own, personalized interpretation or not include the one shared by most? And how do we avoid them destroying each other?
