  • People I have gone to the vampire Castle delivered Serena and refused becoming a vampire but when I returned to the DawnGuard there's no vampire attack and Isran won't talk about the quest, I have tried to use console commands, go directly from one castle to another, go outside and then come back, wait and even sleep but nothing is working, can anyone shed a light upon me?

    • One suggestion is when you get banished from Castle Volkihar do not fast travel and use the boat as the trigger for the quest to move forward might be going near the boat. Otherwise see if the commands here were the same as the ones you tried.

    • Nope nothing fixed it I already had tried these console commands. :/

    • Same with Vigilant Tolan. Tolan will arrive there ahead of you, where he will be killed by the vampires in the first room. http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Vigilant_Tolan Please tell us, if one of them (Adalvald or Tolan) where alive (maybe this ist the bug) when you arrive at Dimhollow Crypt, an do you could protect one of them?

It is Vigilant Tolan. http://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Vigilant_Tolan. The Wiki here is not refreshed to Skyrim Special Edition, because his dead isn't scripted anymore. I protected him from vampires and he survived and went back to Dawnguard Castle. How Tsumefan2 described, the quest a new order starts (thanks a lot for the advice). On my case I load an older save, go to Dimhollow Crypt and protect Tolan, after that I load my newest save and resurrected Tolan with the spell resurrection (PS4 mod), because Tolan was now dead again. It is weird, but in my case it worked.

    • I had the same issue on pc. For me the bug was caused due to the "Open Cities" mod. After I disabled that I went to a previous save (right before refusing Harkon's gift), and refused him again. After being teleported out of the castle, I have the "A New Order" quest. Hope this helps someone! :)

    • I can't believe this if not for trying it myself, but Vigilant Tolan is indeed the cause in my case. There are two instances of him(apprently a Special Edtion bug) in the cave, one already dead, another was alive when I enter but killed by vampires. After I resurrected the once alive one, the quest triggers. I think it works the same way as not let him get killed in the first place.

    • So go back and revive vigilant tolan? I think i accidentally killed him in the excitement of the dogs and vampires. So go back revive and it should be all good?

    • I was having this issue as well. I'll be specific in how I fixed it.

When I entered Dimhollow Crypt, I saw Vigilant Tolan, alive and well, but heard two vampires talking about killing him.

Turns out, just up the bend, there was Tolan's corpse, along with two vampire corpes.

I was then attacked by two vampires and a dog. The alive Torlan ended up dying in the melee, and I figured no big deal, I'll just loot his corpse twice. bonus!

Went through the story with no issues. Talked to Lord Harkon and refused his gift. Was teleported out. Got the dual quest completion text, and that was it. So I fast traveled to Fort Dawnguard, and nothing. Everyone was chill. Waited a few days and did other quests and kept rechecking Dawnguard to see if it would give me the next quest, and didn't happen.

I tred using the console commands, but that did not work either. So I restarted the game...was only level 46.

This time I removed all mods and went right toward the Dawnguard quest, ignoring pretty much everything else. Zero quest done. Zero companions recruited. Exact same result. I tried ressurecting Tolan and going back to Fort Dawnguard, nothing. I tried putting in the console comannds to start the event, nothing.

I was smart enough to have a save happened before I went into the castle. So I reloaded. I went back to Dimhollow Crypt, and used the console command to resurrect the Tolan that died in battle. I then went back to the castle and entered, and again turned down Harkon's gift.

As I got teleported out, there was a quest marker icon on the boat! So I clicked on that, and then once on the other side, there was a white quest marker on Fort Dawnguard. I Fast Traveled there, and as I ran up to the entrance, I found the Dawnguard's fighting off some Vampires! Success!

I also noticed that Tolan was there, walking up to the gate. So ya...but what ever.

Seems the bug is letting that extra Tolan die. He needs to be alive before you enter the castle to refuse the gift.

      Hopes this helps.

    • hey guys,

I know im pretty late on this (although the topic seems to have gotten more attention again recently so theres a glimmer of hope) so you all know the story - I brought the vampire girl back to the castle and refused harkon and the next step didnt trigger...and that was about 40 gameplay hours ago. so i dont want to reload my old save obviously, and Im playing on PS4 - PSVR - so console commands aren't an option since they dont exist on that platform. Two questions i desperately need the answer to based on these comments - 1 - can i actually resurrect him using in game spells - because i found both of his dead bodies and used a scroll of dread zombie and dead thrall and both of Tolans corpses resisted them... and 2 - as user MarCreek posted - "On my case I load an older save, go to Dimhollow Crypt and protect Tolan, after that I load my newest save and resurrected Tolan with the spell resurrection (PS4 mod), because Tolan was now dead again. It is weird, but in my case it worked." - does this mean you used a mod for skyrim on the ps4? if so.....where do i get this mod, and if its not too much trouble, can someone give me a walkthrough of how to install it? ive never installed a mod on a PS4 before - and a follow up - will i need to also load an old save, keep him alive, and then load my new game and ressurect him in that? or can i just go to my current save and ressurect him? Thanks so much guys - i doubt anyone will get back to me, but please, please do if you see this message and know the solution!

    • hey its me again, i posted the previous comment ^^. I just did a little more digging. turns out there isnt mod support available for skyrim PSVR. like AT ALL. so unless i scrap my last 40 hours of gameplay, or theres an in game way to resurrect Tolan without mods, I'm completely, utterly, royally F'd. I'm in absolute awe of the incompetence of Bethesda. its truly staggering. they are the absolute most incompetent AAA developer in the industry. they should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

so if you have tried all fixes and nothing worked try this method worked for me without having to load old saves or uninstall and reinstall

    • Okay so to fix this bug I performed the following steps:

      1) Get ejected from the castle by refusing the vampire gift.

      2) When the quest doesn't start I first resurected Vigilant Tolan (I can confirm that the steps after this did NOT work before I resurrected him. You can resurrect him using console commands as follows: prid xx003532 (where xx is the ESP number in your load order, for me this was 02) resurrect

      3) After performing step two I entered the following console commands which resulted in the quest starting: setstage dlc1hunterbaseintro 0 resetquest dlc1hunterbaseintro setstage dlc1hunterbaseintro 20

And thats it. The quest should start and tell you to speak to Isran. I probably should mention that I did this before fast travelling from the castle or even taking the boat so I am unsure if this will affect this fix or not. I've only just sorted this out myself so I have no idea if this will break something else further down the line or even if the quest will work properly, i'll post again if I have any further issues. Good luck guys!

    • Hey, I'm having this exact same problem, A New Order refuses to start, despite me dropping Serana off and refusing her father's gift.I'm on Ps4 and using  mods by the way. I go back to Fort Dawnguard, and no vampire attacks, and Isran says nothing. I saved right before taking the boat over to the island, so I can go back before dropping Serana off. I encountered this problem early in my playthrough, so I just never dropped Serana off, and keapt playing the game with her as an extra ally. But now I'm done the main quest, all faction quests, all Daedric Quests I care to complete, and beat Miraak, Dawnguard is the only signifficant thing left to beat, and it's frustraiting that it won't continue.

I've tried DOZENS of times to try and get A new Order to start, doing different things to try and force things along, disabled mods, disabled items that I thought could be causing problems, etc. etc.

Since I am on PS4, Console commands can't fix anything for me. I have heard resurrectring Vigilant Tolan seems to be a key part of the solution. I don't have Console Commands, but I do have a modded resurect spell that can bring people back to life. Could that be enough I wonder? The only prblem, it's been months in game since he died, I wonder if his corpse is still even there.

    • Well, I found Tolan's corpse, still there, but it resisted Resucrect, probably because it was meant to be a corpse all along. Not sure about any 'extra' Tolan that might have spawned in when this all started, but there was no extra body in the room, only him and the vampires, who were also still there.

If there was more than one Tolan that gets created and gltiches the gameww when he dies, and that Tolan's cropse despawned, I may be screwed yet again. It really annoys me that I can't finish the quest at all, I really wanted to finish a full playthrough. I wonder if I can trick the game into continueing if I use mods to sequence break, like breaking into the Soul Cairn early using a warp point, but I doubt it. At best I can act like the Soul Cairn is active, but I'm sure the quest will still be broken when I get back.

    • In my experience, what happens to Tolan or the other guy (Addald) doesn't seem to be the issue. On XB1 here, I just reloaded at a point before dropping Serana off at Volkihar and that resolved the issue.

        Loading editor
    • Yeah, no, I saved before taking Serana to her castle every time, and every time I drop her off, nothing happens when I get back to Fort Dawnguard. I must have gone through the process more than a dozen times, and every time, the following quest refuses to start. So it's not just a matter of going back to before I've dropped Serana off, as I've done that step to death.

    • It Happened to me AGAIN!!! On another file this time. WTF!!! What is wrong with this game, why can't I get this stupid Quest to start? What Am I doing wrong? This is so frustraiting. Could it be a mod or something? This is so frustraiting, not being able to complete a whole section of the game, twice now this is beyond infuriating. I literally created that second file just So I could actually finish this quest now. Somebody, please suggest a solution to this, I am losing my mind.

    • I suppose you could try fast traveling between Fort Dawnguard and Castle Volkihar with the hope that something might start the attacks. You could try waiting around as well or doing other quests before returning to Fort Dawnguard, but if that doesn't work, I don't know what else might help.

        Loading editor
    • Thanks, maybe it will help, I don't know. I can at least make up a back up save before dropping off Serana that I can go back to incase I never get the quest to start.  I have forced my way though one quest in my last save. The fight with Miraak keapt glitching up, but after resetting a whole bunch, and trying different strategies, the quest finally finished. I do recall doing more than few attempts to start the quest after dropping her off, diableling mods, waiting around for days, fast traveling to and from the castle, nothing seemed to work.
