  • So today I was traveling on foot heading from Whiterun Stables to Markarth, on the main road between them, not across wilderness because in my opinion the main road is safer and since this character is low level and I'm trying to be cautious especially after I got moon-launched in one hit by a giant, anyway, I haven't cleared Bleak Falls Barrow and gotten the Dragonstone yet, so it can't be a dragon, and it can't be the Greybeards' summons. And then, thinking maybe a giant I hit the wait button to see if there was an enemy, in which case if it was a giant, I would run, because I'm scared to fight giants with this character (I say that because my other character has slaughtered giants and survived). But anyway, there was no enemy nearby, and I didn't see any bandit camps either. Also, I don't know if this important, but this occurred on two saves, because one save I died shortly after encountering it, I can't remember why, and then the second time I survived because nothing attacked. And it occurred in the same spot both times. I watched a youtube video called Skyrim's Mysterious Earthquake in the Reach. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GoVrMok8RY I hope this link works. If anybody knows what this is, please tell me. I've been many threads on different websites to try to solve it. Please tell me and thank your efforts.

    • Yeah i have them haplen often i assumed it was because of Katria's doings in the Dwemer Ruins

    • Theres a thread here that ends up talking about the quakes but the Dawnguard quest Lost to the Ages involves earthquakes and is mostly set in the Reach.

    • No that's not what is in my case, because I only have the base game, with no DLCs and while I'm planning on getting Dawnguard, I haven't yet. And since the ruins, the character and the mission are all added by Dawnguard, that's not what is for me.

    • Ah could just be random earthquakes id imagine skyrim will have them too, never heard of them resulting in death to the player though

    • Maybe they were already in the base game and the dlc just added the quest (that was mentioned in the other thread i linked above). Some people also say inside tombs and around Dwemer ruins can have small quakes. It could very well just be for a bit of extra immersion in the world.

There are also some traps (like Bandit Bridge) that can cause the screen to shake, they can be set off by npcs or creatures so can sometimes trigger before you get that close to them (or even in sight of them).

I didn't die BECAUSE of them I died after seeing the first time (at the hands of an enemy NPC, I think it was a giant).

The ruins were added, I don't know if the quakes were already there. If they weren't I did think of something and I also saw it on one of the threads I read. What if they had already integrated the quakes into the game before they made the connected ruins and quest as part of Dawnguard? Because, looking at the page for the ruins, I was near where they are when Dawnguard is installed. So that could be an oversight. I mean, what if they meant for it to be in the base game but decided it in Dawnguard and had already put in the quakes and didn't take them out?

    • I'm the original poster. You do have a good point about that, Blitzbear.

    • I heard somewhere, can’t remember where that it had something the do with the after effects of the Aetherium Wars? As if the fighting resonated enough in the future to cause quakes. I saw that as I sit experienced a quake on the steps leading to Arkngthamz.

    • Same here. I was next to Arkngthamz when I it happened, googled it and found this thread. Anyone know what is up?

    • The dwemer set into place a self destruct mechanism at Arkngthamz to ensure the aetherium key shard was never to be used again. Based upon what happened during the Aetherium wars the Dwemer came to the realization that the items produced from Aetherium were to powerful for Men or Mer to use. From the sophistication of the device built into the Arkanthamnz vault the earthquake was meant to destroy the key shard and the entire city possibly the entire countryside.
