  • In many articles i see that the explanation for the College of Winterhold seemingly untouched is that it's unknown as to why its still up and why it's untouched.

So my theory is that the Midden, the big underground dungoen to the College kept the College up and why the giant rock in which the College rests upon is untouched by the waves. Also inside the Midden theres the Auger of Dunlain, Draugrs and Ice Wraiths which makes clear knowledge that in the Midden also holds alot of magic. The Midden also is built very sturdily and is made very tough so i think this is the most likely reason as to why the College still stands.

    • According to the book On the Great Collapse -

"This great collapse that has devastated Winterhold was unexpected, I assure you. That the College has remained unaffected is only a testament to the protective magicks placed around it so long ago."

    • most likely, their magic, probs Shalidor's magic should be well enough to keep the College up, cos the Archmage Shalidor was pretty much a Messiah to the Mages and therefore super powered, at least that's what I think.

    • The Augur is who caused the great collapse in his search for immense power.

The collapse is also why he's in his current form. Too much power. Boom. Fizzle. Ashes. Yaaay giant spirit orb!

    •  I awlays like the idea someone did it in an attempt to destroy the collage, but how could Augar become powerfull enough to destroy most of the greatest city in skyrim(At the time). That would reguire the eye or staff of magic or maybe the heart of loikhan to be THAT powerfull. Shalador is the only normal mage weve heard of having that much power, but I doubt anyone will have that power again. It must of been the eye of magnus, yet how he got that MASSIVE orb to use without anyone noticing and get it back in the ruin? very unlickly.

    • I've always thought the Great collapse was result of the Red mountain eruption, and the intense magicka surrounded the college acted as protectant.

    • I have a theory that the Augor and Arch Mage Shalador are the same person. I believe that Shalador became the Augor after seeking immense power, and that maybe him turning into the Augor was what caused the Great Collapse.

Shalidor is far older than the Augur, dating back to the First Era. So they could not possibly be the same person. (This is proven by the fact that Tolfdir knew the Augur when he was still a mortal being with a physical manifestation on this plane, as opposed to his current state of existence, and Tolfdir can't be more than 60 or 70, unless he's used magic to extend his lifespan.)

Tolfdir never knew Augur in person. In conversation with him, he said it was many years ago and he told the Dragonborn only what he heard in tales and stories.

Alteration magic can slow the flow of time, so for all we know, he used it to slow his aging down, hence why he still only looks like an old man. He could be 100 or more, and still look 60 or 70. He WAS around for the Midden Incident, after all, and that was several decades before the Dragonborn joined the College.
