    • Reload a save from before you purged Whiterun, get them out of there, and destroy Whiterun again.

    • If your on PC you could try using commands to get them back. Otherwise if you get married your spouse will the have dialog to move the whole family, that could be worth trying out or checking around Whiterun to make sure they haven't got trapped in some building. Reloading as soon as you noticed it happen was the most reliable thing to do though.

    • If you're on PC, you can do the following:

      1. Find their ID numbers here on the wiki.

      2. Open the command console with ~ and type in "prid ##" without quotes, and where ## is the number you found here on the wiki.

      3. type "moveto player" again without quotes

      4. If alive, they should return home, they may have been stuck. If dead, you can then type in "resurrect".

Be careful using resurrect on certain named NPCs. Some are supposed to die for certain quests and resurrecting them can cause instability in the game. Also, some aren't necessarily supposed to die, but if they do, there are contingencies, and resurrecting them after the contingency has been put in place can also cause instability. Such as Belethor in Whiterun. If Belethor is killed in a vampire attack on the streets, his shop will be locked. If you resurrect him immediately, you can prevent any changes, however, if a day or two goes by, Ysolda might take over his store, but it's possible she might never unlock the door, she might just stand in the store forever. In which case, this store will no longer be available to you for trading. If you were to resurrect Belethor after this happens, he might unlock the store and resume his normal activities, but Ysolda will remain as well, and this could cause problems.

Also, to prevent your kids from being killed in future, select them with the console open (open the console with ~ and then put your cursor on them and click, their info will display on your screen) and type in setessential ## 1, where ## is their ID number. This will make them an essential NPC, meaning they can't be killed. I do this with my kids, spouse and housecarls.

The kids are essential unless that status was removed . . .
